Howard the Duck Creator Steve Gerber Dead at 60
Steve Gerber, creator of the Howard the Duck comic books and the 1980s animated series Thundarr the Barbarian, has died at age 60. Gerber had been suffering form pulmonary fibrosis.
Gerber was best known for Marvel's Howard series, but he also cocreated the company's Omega the Unknown. Later, he worked as a story editor on such TV projects as G.I. Joe and Dungeons & Dragons. His most recent project was Hard Times, for DC Comics. — Anna Dimond

There is a sad irony in Gerber's death just as the WGA writers are going back to work. It is Gerber who spearheaded the move (back in the late-70s/early-80s) to get the same kind of respect for comic book creators that the writers were seeking this year.
Howard The Duck (and puhlease don't think of the movie...it paled in comparison to the superlative comic series)...
where was I? Oh yeah...
Howard The Duck was one of the icons of my teen years. In fact, when he and Mary Hartman went through simultaneous nervous breakdowns, I remember walking around in a daze for weeks, trying to evoke a similar kind of meltdown. (Alas, I was burdened with a relatively happy youth, so I didn't get to veer off the deep end, other than vicariously.)
I am happy that I had the presence of mind to hang onto those Howard comics. I will be reliving some of Gerber's best work for the rest of the weekend (and wearing my "Howard For President '76" campaign button)! I hope he is somewhere smiling about that.
As for me, to quote the Duck himself about this news: "Waugh!!!"
