Don Sinclair Davis, an Army vet turned character actor best known to TV fans for his roles as Stargate SG-1's General George Hammond and Twin Peaks' Major Garland Briggs, died on Sunday of a heart attack. He was 65.

A family friend tells the Vancouver Sun that Davis — who called Gibsons, British Columbia, home — had dealt with heart problems for years, and suffered from diabetes.

Davis leaves behind his wife of five years, Ruby, and a son from a previous marriage. — Matt Mitovich

I was shocked this news wasn't one of the four stories under "Breaking News," or at the very least, under "Other Top Stories"—this fine actor (and man) has been a part of many, many television shows over the years and his death should warrant more than a couple of paragraphs a few clicks down.

This is sad news. I enjoyed seeing him show up in so many things ... but he'll always be Bill Scully to me!

How sad. He's been everywhere, I've known him as quite a few characters.

Oh Sad! We'll miss you.

Don Davis was always a pleasure to see pop up in any number of shows and movies. Class act and a wonderful actor.

At ease Major Briggs.

My sympathies to his family and loved ones. I was always happy to see his name in the credits when I watched something. He will be missed.

Based on Don's appearance the last few years, he may have died of a heart attack, but it was the diabetes that kiiled him. I recognize the signs - my father died the same way.

The General is dead - long live the general, in our hearts and our memories.

Don was not just fun to watch on screen, but a really terrific guy. I had the fortune of meeting him two years ago, and found him to be absolutely honest and down to earth, with a ton of heart and absolutely no interest in pretense.

GateWorld has a longer story on his passing and a tribute video to this outstanding actor and man:

This saddens me deeply. He was a fantastic actor and I always enjoyed seeing him popup in various places.

I pray for his family during this time.

I wasn't much of a Stargate fan, but I always enjoyed his work. He will definitely be missed, and I echo the poster above who said his passing should have been bigger news than was afforded to it.

Wow, this is horrible news. I loved him on SG-1 for many years. He was a great actor. My heart goes out to his friends and family.
