Momoa's New 'Do Is a Don't, Says Stargate

His character, Ronon, still has his massive mane, but Jason Momoa, who plays the studly warrior on Stargate Atlantis, has shed his dreads — all five pounds of them.

"After six-plus years, my head and neck were starting to hurt a lot," says Momoa, adding that all the hair kept him from wearing a bike helmet and keeping his balance while surfing. Execs at the Sci Fi Channel "didn’t want me to cut 'em," so now the actor has to wear a wig of dreads on screen. But, he adds, "The wig weighs more than my own hair, which sucks. I’d love to get rid of it — and see what the fans think!" — Ileane Rudolph

POLL: What do you think of Momoa's new look?

He could be bald and I would still find him sexy. :-x

Wow, slow news day. But I agree he is hot!

He's appealing no matter what the look. I only wish they gave him more face time in the show.

The dreads were part of his species look when he first became part of the show. I see no reason his character couldn't lose them now, having spent the last few years among the earthlings. Unlike Sampson his hair isn't related to his strength and physical prowess. SciFi let Ronon lose the locks! **stands on table holding hand lettered sign reading HAIRCUT**

Joe Malozzi said there was even a scene in an upcoming episode that would explain the haircut! Sci-Fi can be a little ridiculous. It reminds me of the furor when Chris Judge grew out his hair and dyed it blonde! :P

IMO, he looks better with the new look. Was he hired for his hair or acting?

snoopy_buddy, dude, Chris Judge grew a soul patch on his chin and dyed that blonde. That was in season four. In Season eight he let his hair grow out, but he didn't dye it blonde.

Jason is a cutie, no matter what his hair style.

Let the poor guy have his short hair. He's good looking regardless but if the short hair makes him feel more comfortable, I say let him wear it like that. It is his hair after all.

So one day on Atlantis, the character Ronon will decide to get a haircut. It's not the end of the world. The so-called "powers that be" on Atlantis are starting to nitpick too much. Characters cut hair or get new hairstyles all the time.

Ditch the dreads!! (And yeah, I'll agree w/ the consensus... the guy's good looking either way!)

In the season finale, the building they were in collapsed. When the new season starts--Ronan is saved heroically by his hair--which made the ultimate sacrifice and gave up it's dreads for his life. To free him from the rubble, they had to be sheared off. Ta-Da!!

Looks pretty hot with the short hair although I loved him with long non-dreaded hair too.

but oh come on TV Guide, find a nice smiling shot of him to post. He's got a killer smile! :^O

This is a sad day for TV GUIDE when they are posting news that was reported on May 26th on www.gateworld.net and discussed by fans over there.

I know there may not be much happening in TVLAND rignt now but recycling month old news from a fan site is really lazy reporting.

Come on TV GUIDE, you can do better than this!

I think it's about time he lost the dreads - in real life as well as in SGA. It's not like his other name is Samson... he's not gonna be any less capable of helping save the Pegasus Galaxy just because he has shorter hair. Heck, John & Rodney do *their* share of saving on a regular basis & neither of them are carrying around that much hair.

When I first heard about the possibility of losing the dreads, I was against it, because it seemed so much an integral part of the character and I liked the look. That lasted until I heard what the health costs were to the actor. I'm fine with them writing a reason for him to cut the dreads off... as others say, he's a part of the Atlantis team now for a few years and it makes sense. It's no big deal. Daniel Jackson cut his hair and there was no big outcry, except for the fact that it was never explained. SciFi channel is worrying for nothing. Ronon is so much more than his dreads and Jason is so much more of an actor than his hair.
