Star Trek's George Takei: Gay Marriage Ruling Is "Simply Exquisite"

George Takei, aka Star Trek's original Sulu, is getting married. Following in the footsteps of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Takei announced on his Website that he and Brad Altman, his partner of 21 years, will be taking advantage of the new California state law allowing marriage for all couples, regardless of gender combo.

Of his relationship and the opportunity to marry, Takei wrote, "We've shared the good times as well as struggled through the bad. [Brad] helped me care for my ailing mother who lived with us for the last years of her life. He is my love and I can't imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily."

Takei has not yet announced wedding details, but said that he and Altman are enjoying the "delicious dilemma" of planning. He concluded, "Marriage equality took a long time, but, like fine wine, its bouquet is simply exquisite." Big congrats! — Anna Dimond

Now gay people can experience all the joy of marriage.........................and divorce, and divorce attorneys and attorney fees and losing half your stuff ( California law unless you have a prenup). The only people truly happy are wedding planers and divorce attorneys.

Good for him! He first announced this on the Howard Stern Show where he appears occasionally as their announcer. Brad seems to be a quiet, nice guy and he and George have a funny dynamic.

What I'd like to know is will Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman get married now? They had said that they wouldn't get married unless and until gay marriage was legal in California. I think they sort of joked about it as they didn't think that it would happen. So, now that it's legal, will they follow their friends Howard Stern and Beth Ostrosky and actually get married, or will they find another reason to avoid it?

When you read lovely sentiments like this, how can anyone justify denying the rights and privileges of marriage to same-sex couples? Anyone who is against marriage for any and all couples is just heartless, self-serving, and mean.

And for all those smart alecks who say "now gays can experience marriage...and divorce...and losing their stuff...and paying attorney's fees..." Well, I suppose they'd welcome that, too, because at least they'd be treated the same as any other couple...and that can only be a good thing.

Bitter, party of one!

Hopefully, even in your cynical mind, you can see that's the issue. Yes, now we (at least those in California) can have the same opportunites as other citizens. And if that includes making a mistake in who we marry...GOOD! I'll take that over not being allowed to have the choice at all!!

Of course, I live in Texas. We amended our constitution so we could codify our hatred and bigotry to protect the "sanctity" of marriage. <sarcasm intentional>

I wish you well, George! As a long-time of you and Star Trek, I say "boldly go..."
