Star Trek's Karl Urban: Young Bones Is Still an "Irascible Humanist"

Will the space cadets we meet in J.J. Abrams' much-anticipated Star Trek origin film aptly mirror the eventual Enterprise crew we now know and love? Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy, tells TVGuide.com: "The movie is very, very faithful to the spirit of the original series and the characters that were created in the '60s." For example, Urban's Bones "is the lovable, irascible humanist that he has always been [and] a good friend of Jim Kirk." That said, he believes "J.J. is going to reinvigorate this franchise in a fresh and exciting way."

Can Trek fans look forward to young Bones delivering one of his trademark "I'm a doctor, not a [blank]" lines? "I can't say!" Urban, who stars CBS' Comanche Moon (premiering Jan. 13), answers with a laugh. "I would love to tell you, but... I'm not allowed to say."

Karl is such a cool and funny guy - met him a few years ago, and he was a hoot! I'll definately be watching (the film and the mini series).

As a Star Trek fan when I hear the words "faithful to the spirit of the original series" I start to worry. This suggests to me that the story lines will not link up well. This is exactly what I feared would happen. Oh well. Start Trek is dead, long live its memory.

Oh geeze - is it possible to BE more of an overdramatic fanboy?

How much "story" is there about the Academy days of Kirk and Company? Seriously...Really...are you going to be dramatic about a story line that has barely been addressed in all the years of the programs?

Seriously...people like you create the super-geek stereotype. Why don't you actually WAIT for the film before you start to faint from the vapors of non-canonicity?

If it's dead, then they might as well re-imagine the franchise and give it new life.

Why is it that we expect our most beloved of characters to never change? What is it about them that inadvertently brings out such fears of inadaquacy? Let us hope that all of our heroes have the ability to live and grow as our culture and our understanding of ourselves grow!
