Ghuy'Cha'! J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Bumped to 2009!

Variety reports that Paramount is pushing back the release of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek from Dec. 25 of this year to May 8, 2009. We guess the studio wants to capitalize off the huge buzz that their casting news and trailers have received by letting fans stew in their geek juices a bit longer. Oh, we're stewing.

Officially, the switcheroo was attributed to the studio's release calendar, and now Star Trek has no competition in its new slot — at least not yet, even though it opens one week after X-Men Origins: Wolverine and one week before Da Vinci Code prequel Angels and Demons. No offense to the other movies, but we think with the cast Trek has garnered (including Zachary Quinto as Spock, Eric Bana as Nero and Winona "Out of Hiding" Ryder as Amanda Grayson), and the power of J.J. Abrams behind it, Trek will do just fine. Can we buy our tickets yet? —Erin Fox

I think the real reason is to make room to fit Shatner in for his part.

I've felt all along that all the "too-doo" about Shat not being in the movie was a smokescreen for his actual participation.

If I'm wrong, ok, but that's what I think.

Well, they would need A LOT of room for his ego, but I buy J.J.s' explaination for Billy-boy's absence-The character already died on screen before the time-period of old-Spock's appearance.

Winona Ryder? I guess they can delay the release all they want now, as far as I'm concerned.

My guess is, and maybe they'd never admit it, is that the movie has been filmed during the writer's strike with the last shooting script they had before the strike went into effect. This prevented the writers from being on set to "tweak" the script for anything that sounded good on paper, but didn't work when spoken...or if anything ad lib worked better, or if the writers just suddenly had different ideas. This will allow them to do rewrites and reshoots to make sure it is 100%. That they announced this right after the strike ended is proof enough for me. It will also give them more time for the special effects. I don't see a delay as a bad thing. You really don't want it rushed through, look at X-Men 3. That movie had a release date before it had a script.

My guess is that they needed to do rewrites, because the dialogue was coming off flat (I remember reading some 'inside scoop' somewhere), but couldn't because of the strike. Now they can, so they're taking the time to get it right.

With the Shatner thing, I still think they're playing a game. Even though Kirk died in Generations, this is apparently a time travel story, so they could find a way to rewrite that scene so he survives. I think Shatner will be in it, but it won't be revealed until later.

My guess is that this movie is going to suck.
