Inside Spider-man's Return and The Batman's Finale

This week marks a changing of the superhero guard on Kids' WB, the CW's Saturday-morning cartoon block. Swinging into the picture is The Spectacular Spider-Man, which makes its debut with back-to-back episodes (airing March 8 at 10 and 10:30 am/ET).

That's followed at 11 am/ET by the hour-long series finale of The Batman. In his final adventure, Batman and Robin team up with Green Arrow to battle the Joining, an alien menace introduced in last year's season finale. This time around, the Joining steals the abilities of the superpowered Justice League members — Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Martian Manhunter — and transfers them into robotic androids.

Though The Batman is ending its five-season run, Batfans still have plenty to look forward to: In addition to this summer's live-action theatrical The Dark Knight, rumor has it that a new Batman TV 'toon modeled after the comic book The Brave and the Bold is in the pipeline. — Rich Sands

My daughter is going to be disappointed. She looks forward to the Legion of Super Heroes and the Batman every weekend. She was hoping that they would bring back the Justice League series.

They are ending The Batman? That was one of the most entertaining, well done cartoons I have seen in a long time. I am personally not a fan of Janpanese animation and find most of the cartoons these days are too Jap-An. My husband is a HUGE comic book buff and has been watching the series for a while now. He is not happy to hear the news (even if Spiderman, his favorite comic book hero, is starting next week).

Any reasons given as to why they are ending it?

None that I could find, Anna, but this is the average life of the Batman cartoons. I remember Batman:Animated series that premiered in '92, ran until '95; then it was revamped in '97 and ran for another year, called the Batman/Superman hour; then from '98-'00 we got Batman Beyond, and then the Justice League followed from 2001-2005, I think.

I remember I couldn't stomach this show at first because Bats (who is MY FAVORITE HERO), looked like a Jackie Chan Batman. Then, in late season 2, Alan Burnett, who was a part of the Batman:animated series became an exec. producer and I got sucked in, lol.

This show grew on me, even though they played loose and fancy free with some of the storylines (Batgirl being older than Robin, origin of Clayface, Superman NOT wanting to be part of the League when it's actually Bats who felt that way, etc.). But it's all good.

I'm personally waiting for the DVD of Justice League: First Frontier that just came out--and hope and hopehopehope that the Brave and the Bold is a Bruce Timm/Alan Burnett/Paul Dini/Andrea Romano team/concept.

But that's just me. :-p
