Smoke Monster Blinks: Lost Moved Out of Idol's Way

As you may have read last night in the Ausiello Report, ABC's just-revealed mid-season schedule finds Lost airing an hour later — Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET — so as to save the fan fave from being crushed by the return of Simon, Paula and Randy, as well as to stave off further ratings slippage at the hands of the surging Criminal Minds.

Playing the role of sacrificial lambs in this scenario are the new comedies Knights of Prosperity and In Case of Emergency, which will fill the 9 o'clock hour starting Jan. 3 — a month before Day Break was scheduled to end its run. Per Variety, Taye Diggs' thriller will either be dropped after its Dec. 27 airing or shuttled to a new night. ABC News programming will run at 10, until Lost's Feb. 7 return.

Maybe ABC didn't take into account that every single series that aired 10pm on Wednesday were cancelled? ABC is a coward by moving out of Idol's way. Why not put their stupid Grey's Anatomy(Scrub and ER rip-off) against Idol?

Oh, no. What is going to happen to Daybreak? That is a good show, that shouldn't have to suffer. Give it a chance!!!

Here's my issue: Thus far this season, there have been about 34 million people watching TV Wednesdays at 10. And about half of them are committed to CSI: NY. (See today's related Interviews & Features Q&A!) Lost had been drawing mid- to high teens. See where I am going here...?

Who this is good news for is the ABC affiliates, Variety points out, because they now have a super-strong lead-in for local news programming.

Interesting... I have a feeling ABC will be regretting this, people already seem to use tivo and DVR quite a bit at the 10 o'clock hour. I'm afraid I may have to turn into one of them at times...

Scorned1, ER was never good, and I never understood how it stayed on the air. As for scrubs, I'm just a shocked it's still on too considering it has never been funny. They don't even have half the quality of Greys.

As for Lost, airing at 10pm is fine, its not like ABC has had success with anything else in that timeslot. why suffer for ratings for 2 hours instead of just one? Its a smart move. of course this leaves me with nothing to watch at 9pm.

That's alright, we don't need you to watch Scrubs and drag down the median IQ level of the viewers. Keep watching According to Jim and Still Standing, they'll tell you when to laugh, then you'll think it's funny.

Amen, Woodson21!

"ER was never good"?
"Scrubs...has never been funny"?!
"They don't even have half the quality of Greys"?!?

Yikes. Please tell me you don't have a Nielsen box, WildBill.

I am going to hold judgement on the Lost move. Wait, what about Medium? I will watch both - thank God for VCR's and the like!

But - what is up with Daybreak? When ABC banished The Nine I wondered if I should continue to watch Daybreak & everyone said that ABC was committed. Well obviously they are commit-a-phobs! When they make an announcement like this the ratings just go down. People think, "why should I watch if it's just going to get cancelled?" I will continue with it, but these guys are Cowards! I think I am through with any new ABC serials. I guess they are helping me with my TV addiction. 'Cuz I'm just giving up on them.

Regarding Scrubs, ER, and Grey's. Love them all. Last season I did think it was a bit sad that a 1/2 hour comedy about a hospital was way better than ER when it came to the drama, but ER is having a great year. It's back. Scrubs is hilarious, and Grey's is wonderful. I love all the different takes of hospital life.

Why is it that if someone doesn't like a show or thinks it isn't funny, it's because he/she is stupid? Is it beyond the posters here to think that two equally intelligent people can have differing opinions of a show?

On topic: I wonder how much this will affect the ratings for CSI:NY, which has been having a great year, since Lost will be its first real competition in the timeslot.

Well, I guess this was the only thing ABC could've done. Lost would've been 3rd to Idol and Criminal Minds, especially after the Super Bowl episode. So you can't blame ABC for flinching.

I think it is a bold move but with well managed risk. Many people have already suggested that whatever programming ABC chooses to air after Lost is not going to retain its lead-in because Lost fans are known to flock to various internet forums and message boards to discuss and dissect the just aired episode. Putting Lost at 10pm is not going to hurt Lost; if you're a fan you will follow it wherever it goes and tivo whatever show it's aired against. I for one would watch Lost live and tivo CSI:NY for later. OTOH, if you're not a fan by now you are not likely to start watching. By moving Lost to 10pm, at least it frees up the 9pm slot to give another show a chance.

I don't see what the big problem is. I know I'm not going to stop watching Lost, even though it's moved to 10. And while it was a little cowardly to move away from the Idol spot, it was probably the best move they could pull in order to save the ratings. Lost hasn't been doing the best because of all the hype about being off the air for such a long time. It would probably suffer even more if it had to deal with Idol. At least people who could have left now still have the option to return, that is if they were Idol fans as well. However, I don't see the new comedies lasting. Is ABC trying to murder these new comedies, before they even had a chance to be seen?

I thought this thread was about the Lost move, not bashing comedies on opposing networks? Weird.

I'll follow Lost anywhere. As you pointed out, Matt, it isn't like it's got terrible ratings - it doesn't. It's been beaten by Criminal Minds. But half the show on TV would give their left arm for the numbers Lost brings in.
