Smallville at Comic-Con: Lois and Clark to Get Closer!

Smallville fans, rejoice! Following the show's Comic-Con panel, executive producers told TVGuide.com's own Erin Fox that Lois and Clark's relationship is going to take a new direction this season. "Lois and Clark will be working side by side at The Daily Planet, and Lois will start to see Clark in a different way," they said. "She's surprised to see him in a suit, all grown up and handsome. It's no longer going to be played like a brother-sister relationship." (Video of the interview is coming soon!)

That huge news aside, the panel has to have been one of the single best hours of the four-day Comic-Con extravaganza. With a jocular cast and recurring jokes with the audience, the laughter was non-stop — and so were the spoilers. Here are the highlights:

• As reported previously, Season 8 is all about Clark's destiny as Superman. He joins the "Daily Planet" and uses his new gig as a way to find people in need. He also starts to realize that he may need a double identity to truly evolve into Superman.

To that end, exec producer Brian Peterson says that the show will hold to its original "no tights" rule, but he would not comment on the "no flights" restriction.

• Behind-the-scenes changes are to come, too: Comic writer Geoff Johns will be writing a Legion of Superheroes episode of the show, and Allison Mack may have just shaken on a deal to direct an episode. When pressed about her plans, Mack started off with a diplomatic answer, but one of the panelists said, "Why don't we make it official?" Kidding or not, it would be hard to back out of the public pact.

Justin Hartley says that the Green Arrow will be struggling with why he's doing what he's doing, while the show will be exploring the origin of the Green Arrow.

Mack's Chloe will also be doing some struggling of her own, and there's trouble in paradise ahead for her relationship with Jimmy. Mack says that Chloe will be finding some independence this season, though, and she'll maybe even have some new powers to show off — but no details on those yet!

• And might new Smallville arrival Tess Mercer share a smooch with any of the resident studs? Cassidy Freeman titillated the audience by saying she'd like to see her character kiss Chloe.

• Finally, of course, there was a long preview of scenes from the new season. With the introduction of at least two more heroes from DC Comics, the action is ratcheted up, especially as Clark starts to come into his own. In short, expect love, loss, mega-action and more of the Superman mythology to unfold.

So what's your take on all this news? Are you more excited for Season 8 than ever? — Anna Dimond

The more I hear about it, the more excited I get about season 8. I was skeptical at first when they announced 2 new characters and it looked like Allison Mack might be leaving the show. Now that she's on board and Clark is joining The Daily Planet, I can't wait. I hope that we get to see Michael Rosenbaum at least once more before the show ends, but I think it was time to move on from Lex's storyline as well as Lana's. I also think it was a really smart move to make Justin Hartley a regular.

YESS!! This is awesome! Thanks for giving us those awesome news about Clark! If they keep him proactive, this will be a good season indeed! Bringing a comic book writer for an episode seems like a good idea, if of course, the episode is centered around Clark.

Thank you for this info! This is the only reason why I watch Smallville, and this is finally some good news for Clark Kent fans! After two lackluster past seasons, it's definitely time for Smallville to focus on Clark’s journey again!

It’s also exciting that some comics writers will be involved this season too. Please keep the episodes Clark-centric, with him portrayed as the main hero of the story. And, please don’t lose sight of the main purpose of this show, which is Clark’s journey, in the midst of all of these guest stars and supporting characters.

Sweet! I am so excited about Clark and Lois working together at the Planet! And I love that Lois will be surprised by Clark!

And it's great to hear that Clark will be using his job at the Planet to help others. :)

Great news about Geoff Johns writing an ep! He's a great writer.

Thank you TVGuide for giving us Comic-Con news that relates to the main character Clark Kent! It's great to hear that the "no flight" rule has been lifted and the long over due wait for Clark to fly will finally happen in Season 8. I'm couldn't be happier to see that Clark will be using the DP as a way to find people in need. How great will it be to see Clark proactive and reaching beyond SV to save people and the perfect way for him to see the bigger picture and the need for a dual identity. The statement of Clark coming into his own, makes this fan hopeful for a great season.

Ummmm, Anna, that wasn't Kristen on the panel! That was Cassidy, the new cast member. Kristen is no longer on the show. Please do your background investigation before doing your reporting. :)

Season 8 is sounding SUPER! I'm so happy about these new spoilers that particularly relate to Clark and his destiny. Thanks TVGuide! :-D

Things are finally looking more promising than they have in a long time. More mythos focused. Clark finally out of the red jacket!!! and working at the DP alongside of Lois. Lois seeing him differently. Clark proactively coming into his own as SUPERMAN. DC writers getting involved!!! It just keeps getting better and better! :-x

Thanks for the scoop, sounds like the Smallville panel was chock-full of information!

I really hope they handle Clark getting a reporting job at the DP well, what with him dropping out of college in S5 and not having written an article since S4 and all. I do think he would do a good job though, because he's been investigating all this time anyway.

I really hope they're telling the truth when they say that Chloe will be finding some independence this season. I love her, and I can't believe they're sticking her with Jimmy. I like Jimmy, but Chloe/Jimmy is an awful pairing.

Hooray for Allison Mack directing! I know she lost out on directing last season because of the strike, so I'm glad she's getting another opportunity.

Thanks for the news! I'm glad to hear Clark and Lois will be spending more time together: I hope we see more of Lois this season, so we can really get into her character development, and that we'll see an evolution of her relationship to Clark. We've been waiting for it.
