Smallville Casts a Supergirl Who Will "Shake Things Up"

So much for getting Amber Heard. Just in time to be paraded before the Comic-Con fanboys, 22-year-old Laura Vandervoort, whom fans of The N (our Angel Cohn included) know as Instant Star's Sadie, has been cast in the role of Smallville's Kara, aka Supergirl. This superstrong — and airborne! — newcomer may prove to be a super-pain to her kin, however. "We've wanted a character to shake things up," series creator Al Gough tells People. "She may be Clark Kent's cousin, but that doesn't mean she's going to be the obedient one!" Sounds like Paris Hilton, minus the gravitational pull. Actually....

For the complete story on how Smallville will introduce its take on Supergirl, see the TV Guide News Report.

UPDATE: Ausiello has breaking news about a Supernatural role being filled; check it out here.

Clark Kent's cousin from Krypton is a Canuck, Clark Kent's cousin from Krypton is a Canuck...Ugh not enough time. Yay Supergirl.

What about Bippo the SuperMonkey? (real character, although not sure of it's name)--they don't need a female clone of Clark to "shake things up" They have MANY underdeveloped characters to continue to explore--what about more of the Justice League or the escaped Phantom Zoners? Bring in another female superhero like WW, the Black Canary or the Huntress--if you have to have other characters with superpowers, much more interesting if they are different...(but cool it with the meteor freak flavor of the month...)

Um, Matt, tell one of the editors that there is a glaring mistake on the home page, right under the Online Video Guide. It states that the backstage excitement with the American Idol tour is "infections". I think they meant "infectious".

Thanks.

Is this really the best they could do? This is girl is too old to be playing Kara and her facial features aren't as soft. Perhaps if this was Power Girl that they were casting then it would have fit but sadly they weren't. Amber Heard would have been better but even she doesn't seem perfect, I guess that's the trick with casting iconic characters.

I can only hope that their choice for Super Girl is better than their choice for Lois Lane!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Mr Furley... We need Beppo the Super-Monkey, Krypto the Super-Dog, Streaky the Super-Cat, and Comet the Super-Horse!!!

I'm thinking Bippo Monkey is probably too busy to guest star on the show, seeing as how he's apparently writing it.
No good can come from this. Way too old. Why is this a concept the show runners can't seem to get through their thick skulls, into their poorly underdeveloped brains?
Bart Allen, too old.
Victor Stone, too old.
Lois Lane, too much plastic surgery, looks like she's 40!
Way before they thought to cast this, I thought of the perfect person to play Kara. Ashley Benson, formerly of Days of Our Lives. She's young, perfect physical type for the role; and is a moderately decent actor.

Actually, they don't need another Kryptonian now that Clark has a new super-villian to fight that "Bizzarro" Character form the Smallville season finale. I actually think that he is a combo of old villians. Did anyone notice the baddie shoving the Kryptonite in his chest and saying something like "Thanks, just what a needed?" soulds like "Metallo!"

If they want some interesting human sidekicks, maybe they should try Matter-Eater-Lad and Bouncing Boy (both real) DC Comics really came up with some doozeys--Bat-Mite, anyone?

Four words for ya:

Legion.
Of.
Super.
Heroes.

A previous poster mentioned two of their members, so why not have the rest of the crew?

(Too bad this still won't make me come back to Smallville.)

I don't see why they didn't break the casting mold and take the opportunity to add some diversity to the cast. It's depressing to see Smallville continue to exclude other ethnicities; outside of Kristen Kreuk and the pop ins by the guy from Mars there is hardly any diversity on Smallville. And getting rid of Pete didn't help their cause much. Smallville should take a cue from Heroes and think diversely when it comes time cast. The 90210 days are over; bring in the color, CW!

i became a BIG fan of SMALLVILLE during syndication and have faithfully watched the past 2 seasons (primetime).

okay, so i watch it for the amazing effects! supergirl will probably be cool. however, i would love to see more diversity in this show. it will give some extra flavor and added dimension overall.
