Shonda Rhimes: Surprised But Not Insulted by Heigl

At Thursday's ABC show-runners panel, Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes took center stage as she was asked how she reacted to Katherine Heigl's recent statements in the press.

"It was surprising," she began tentatively. "We have a great working relationship, and Izzie is one of my favorite characters." She continued: "Katherine is an outspoken person, as you all know." When pressed for details, Rhimes offered: "I don't think she was insulting the writers. The first half of the season, her storyline was very comic. And during the second half, Katie asked me to write her light so that she could go do her movie," she said. As such, Rhimes appeared to hold no grudges, claiming that it's hard to understand the entire story. "These people are my family. We work together six days a week, 16 hours a day. I've watched as they've changed from lovely young actors to incredibly famous people."

Looking forward, Rhimes refrained from expanding on ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson's assertion that Heigl's storyline this season would be "central to the show." But she did reveal that, after consulting advisors from GLAAD, they found an "interesting, funny way of laying out the [lesbian storyline between Callie and Erica] that isn’t your typical way to deal with it." Hmmm, consider us teased. — Mickey O'Connor

I think Izzie in a coma would be central to the show. Or, what about going to some far and away cryogenics lab and trying to bring Denny back to life?

Seriously? TV Guide online does a column last week on GA spoilers where your main source is "RUMBLINGS" and now you have Shonda Rhimes (really the only credible GA source to ask) right there and only ask about Heigl? So next week when you run another GA speculation and spoilers article with so called "set siders" and the oh so reliable "rumblings" please remember Shonda Rhimes was right in front of you and this was the only crap you could ask about and believe me, when it comes to Heigl, so many of us were done two seasons ago with not only her, but her character. What about all the rest of the characters and story lines? So sad TV Guide, truly sad.

So Heigl asked to be written "light" then complains about her storyline?? What an arrogant person she is. Then she complains about Knocked Up being somewhat sexists but she went ahead and accepted the role. the time to stand up for your "principals" is BEFORE you accept the movie, dear, not after. I have no doubt this has nothing to do with anything other than she's a big mouthed diva who thinks she's better than she is. I agree with the other poster, put her in a coma for good, the less of her the better.

Maybe she meant that she felt she didn't deserve the nod due to the writing BECAUSE she had asked them to write her light, and she'd feel guilty knowing that it was her decision for the writing in the first place. Make sense? Hehe, probably not.

Maybe this is why the second half of the season ROCKED! The last few years they should have been calling the show Izzie Anatomy and I hated it.

I most wish that they would get off Meredith as the "central" character. Can't stand the actress or the character. Her constant "poor me" routine is way, way old and to top it off, she's not the least bit attractive - inside or out. Yes, Katherine is full of herself and she needs to rein it in already.

Even if you have a light schedule, you can still have the material to win an award. Didn't someone win something after having 15 seconds of screentime? It's the quality, not the quantity.

Again, I don't think she was COMPLAINING about the writing! If anything, it was a dig at the strike, not the writers.

I don't think Heigle was complaining. She was just saying that her work this season did not deserve an Emmy nomination. What's the big fuss about!

HONESTLY I THINK THE SHOW IN GENERAL IS REALLY IRRITATING. IT'S JUST A TYPICAL SOAP OPERA SET IN A HOSPITAL. HEIGL IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING NOT BECAUSE OF HER CHARACTER ON THE SHOW BUT BECAUSE SHE IS JUST ANOTHER PRETTY BLONDE WHO ISN'T REALLY THAT TALENTED. SHE THINKS IS MUCH MORE GIFTED THAN SHE REALLY IS AND SHE TAKES HERSELF WAY TOO SERIOUSLY. FIRST SHE INSULTS THE PEOPLE WHO CREATED THE MOVIE KNOCKED UP, THE MOVIE THAT MADE HER A MOVIE STAR AND THEN SHE INSULTS THE WRITERS OF GREY'S ANATOMY, THE SHOW THAT BASICALLY MADE HER A HOUSEHOLD NAME. DOES SHE REALLY THINK SHE CAN'T BE REPLACED? SHE IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A CELEBRITY WHO HAS ALLOWED SUCCESS TO CHANGE THEM. THE SHOW IS REALLY ABOUT PATRICK DEMPSEY AND ELLEN POMPEO NOT KATHERINE HEIGL, SHE'S NEEDS TO REMEMBER THAT.THIS IS FOR ALL SELF-CENTERED CELEBRITIES, WITH ALL THE MONEY THEY MAKE FOR BASICALLY PLAYING MAKE BELIEVE, THEY SHOULD BE MORE GRATEFUL FOR THEIR GOOD FORTUNE.

"I don't think Heigle was complaining. She was just saying that her work this season did not deserve an Emmy nomination. What's the big fuss about!"

Ummm there's honesty and there's just plain disrespect and arrogance.

1# She pretty much dissed the writers, her colleagues, publicly and 2# The way it was said, it was like she had made the assumption that she would still be nominated over all the other actresses with her mediocre material.

Yes Greys was horrid last season. Many shows have bad episodes and seasons. Still you don't find their actors realeasing statements about their bad storylines.

I'm with bluefairies - I wouldn't mind Izzie the Irritant comatose. That way she's still stuck on the show which prevents her from being that big A grade movie star she plans to be, and it doesn't give her any material at all! Only bad thing about that is that the other characters would mope around all depressed.
