Shatner: Star Trek Film Diss Is Not Logical

Set William Shatner on (still) stunned. As expressed in previous sound bites, the original Enterprise captain (no offense, Pike) questions the decision to not extend him the same courtesy as Leonard Nimoy and somehow include him in J.J. Abrams' prequel film lensing now. "How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected? That doesn't make good business sense to me!" the Boston Legal blusterer tells TV's Extra.

To his credit, the Shat argues, "I've become even more popular than I was playing Captain Kirk. I'm good box office and I get publicity.... But, they are going in a different direction." Any snubs aside, Shatner predicts, "It'll be a wonderful film."

He's been complaining about this for months. Let it rest, Shat! My adoration of you has limits, and we've pretty much reached them.

Perhaps J.J. Abrams is concerned over whether both Shatner and his ego will fit on the soundstage.

Not knowing what role Nimoy has as his cameo, maybe it just didn't work to have the former Kirk on the screen? As this is a prequel, maybe it was considered too confusing/self-referential to have too many cast members from the original Trek.

Well Shat has forgotten that they talked to him about this and he told them what kind of money would get him and they said "Thank You". Maybe if he lowered his pay they would consider him. This whole "I told them what it would take to get me" came across as a little flip, and egotistical. My source for this is startrek.com. Now I love me some Captain Kirk (went to see a taping of "Show Me The Money" that's how much) but his crying about it now is very disappointing to me.

I'm very sad that Shatner won't be in this film. I love Star Trek, so I'll eventually see it, but it'll be a bittersweet experience. WS is not only a funny guy (Good Grief, he's one of the reasons I so LOVE Boston Legal), but he's iconic Trek. I'm disappointed in JJ Abrams' decision.

Wow, I love the guy, think he's hilarious on Boston Legal, but seriously how big is his ego?!? The first time, I thought he was right, but now after bringing this up for a month, it's getting old. Let it go!

Maybe he should've thought twice before he agreed to do a Star Trek film where he died!

My hunch is that Nimoy as Spock will simply reminisce to the early days of the classic characters, therefore it makes sense to have him in the film. Kirk is dead. ST fans have come to accept it. Why can't William Shatner!? He's hilarious on Boston Legal! He's in the perfect position to MOVE ON with a little dignity (if it's not too late)!

He is really campaigning to get in this film....Not like he has anything else to do during this strike...

But really, It'd be funny if this is just a cover so when we see him ,it'll be a surprise..not many of those left in this age of web blogging, Right Matt? lol

If they're going to have Leonard Nemoy, why not William Shatner? Have him play Kirk's father or something. It's not fair!

He asked to be killed off in the last Star Trek movie he was in. To put him in this movie would add ten minutes just to explain his resurrection.

Shatner just realized that thanks to his fat ego and even fatter salary demand, he talked himself out of a role in the future of the Star Trek franchise.

Now he is trying to blame J.J. Abrams? Does Shatner think that will get him the role back? You don't bite the hand that was willing to give you a cameo, and by the way - did you forget your character is dead as a doornail?

This is as bad as the stunt Sean Young pulled trying to be cast as Catwoman in the second Batman film by Tim Burton. She went on talk shows dressed as Catwoman begging to get the part. She annoyed the studio and producers. That did not work either.

Shatner is a talented actor, but he needs to check his ego at the door.

Shatner sort of gets it right when he says "I've become even more popular than I was playing Captain Kirk.". He's gotten so much larger than life that if he were to appear in this film, all the focus would be on him and would detract from the story and the new actors. Shatner should shut up and be happy with all he has accomplished and end his silly whining over being left out of the new film. It was the right decision!

This isn't surprising for me; I've known for some time that Shatner had an ego the size of the great out doors. All the biographical stuff, looking at Shatner's history, or behind the scenes of the early days of Trek kinda paint that picture. And if you believe "Harlan Ellison's The City on the Edge of Forever", he's got a bigger ego still; taking the time to go to a writer (Ellison's) house, to read the script he's writing, count the lines he and his costars have lines and assert that he should have more lines than anyone else in the show.
