Stargate Star Finds Sanctuary on Sci Fi Channel

Si Fi Channel has greenlit a full 13-episode season of Sanctuary, a drama that originated online (as the first-ever hi-def Web series, no less) and stars the Stargate world's Amanda Tapping as Dr. Helen Magnus, a woman on a quest to protect "strange creatures that walk the earth." Tapping is exec-producing the TV port along with SG-1 writer-producer Damian Kindler and producer-director Martin Wood, and Sam Egan.

Despite scoring this plum gig, Tapping will guest on at least several Stargate Atlantis episodes next season.

Sanctuary will be the first TV series to shoot live-action actors against "virtual set pieces," à la 300 and Sin City.

I've got Logan's Run now stuck in my head. Grr.

Good for Amanda. I enjoyed her work on Stargate SG-1. Since she's been in so few episodes of Atlantis, I don't think her character is really clicking on that show. I'll look forward to watching her in Sanctuary.

SBThompson, ITA - loved her in SG-1 but she is so under used in Atlantis. I think because she was in the original scientific mind that solved the problem of the week and McKay fills that role on Atlantis, there isn't much for her to do. Only ep I saw that had a spark of that old Sam was Quarantine. I look forward to seeing her in a different more hands on role.

It will be interesting to see what they can do with a TV budget. The online webisodes were better then I'd expected given budget constraints I imagine it had.

I loved Amanda on SG1, but her character never fit in on Atlantis. She never really did anything there, so I'm glad to see she is moving on to something better. Maybe now Torri Higginson can return. Torri never should have been fired from Atlantis in the first place and neither should Paul McGillion. Why do executives think dumping fan fav characters will help ratings? Atlantis has tanked in ratings and stories since Paul and Torri were booted.

That's great! How will they do it, I wonder; show the webisodes, redo them, continue from where they left off, or start completely over?

Amanda's definitely underused on Atlantis. I've been enjoying this season a great deal, especially now that some character arcs are actually progressing. But that makes it even more odd to see Sam just there with nothing much to do.
