Sally Field Shrugs Off Bleepin' Emmy Controversy
Sally Field by John Shearer/WireImage.com
Look at Sally Field giving the Emmys a little last-minute sizzle, delivering a message to war mothers like Brothers & Sisters' Nora that, at the very least because of the phrase "g-ddamned," made censors hit the bleep button. (Watch video here.) "That’s too bad," the Lead Actress in a Drama winner said afterward (and matter of factly) of the uproar. "I wanted to say something about the mothers who wait for their children to come home. I wanted to acknowlege them and what they do. I said at the end there is no question, that if mothers ruled the world there would be no war."
Pressed to elaborate on Fox's bleeping, Field again shrugged, "Oh well. I’ve been there before. Good. I don’t care. I said what I wanted to say. I really think that if mothers ruled the world we wouldn’t be sending our children off to be slaughtered. That’s what Nora Walker is [about], she’s this mother and she sees life through that."
"I probably should’nt have said the 'god' before the 'damned,'" Field allows. "That’s life. I didn’t have a point to get across, I didn’t have an agenda. If they bleep it... oh well. I’ll just say it someplace else."

I was watching here in Brazil and I don't recall any bleeping. I think they didn't include the bleeping in the international feed.
Anyway, this is such a nonstarter, IMHO. Hopefully everyone will have forgotten all about it by tomorrow morning.

I personally turned on the show to be entertained. I feel the stars should stick to what they are getting paid for and not start talking about their political views. Save that for somewhere else. I very rarely tune into the awards shows and now I remember why I don't.

I hope people will consider that, despite the headline, Ms. Field was not censored for her "anti-war rant", but for apparently saying "God" and "Damned" together. It's an FCC standard. Why should it not apply to awards shows?
Most of the time I think it inappropriate for political speeches at awards shows. For me it's hard to take someone seriously when they're talking up the plight of a third-world country in their Armani or Vera Wang - hey, next year, buy off the rack and put your money where your mouth is - but Sally Field won playing Nora, a woman who has fought for all of her kids, including one who is going off to war. Stay-at-home moms aren't sitting around eating bon bons and watching soaps....."Nora" makes me so appreciate everything my mom has done for me and my family, and I hope that, regardless of the actor's personal opinion about the war, I hope her sentiment about moms will come through.
Still, I wish she could have delivered it in a way that wouldn't have stopped the show cold. How much does Helen Mirren charge to teach an "acceptance speech" class?

Why does she say she doesn't have an agenda? Of course she does, she's anti war, she has said so herself half a million times.
These actors think they are so brilliant because they make so much money. Amount of money you get paid does not make you a political science expert. If so we'd have to listen Alex Rodriguez and Michael Vick's war strategies.
She's an actor, she memorizes lines for a living. Stick to that. If I want to hear political commentary then I'll turn on one of the talking head news channels.
Sally Field, the War Mothers don't agree with you and just because you "play" a character then exposes your anti war views doesn't give you the right to use an entertainment award show stage where people are forced to listen to your comments. It's hijacking an audience .... for your own agenda.

I am furious that Fox bleeped Sally Field not for saying that one word, but for trying to make a comment about mothers losing their sons to war.
I am getting to sick of the increasing use of censorship on television merely for the purpose of avoiding offending specific demographic groups of viewers.
Is free speech only guaranteed when it has absolutely no chance of ruffling the feathers of those who disagree with a comment or opinion?

I don't know why they would bleep her. GD is used all the time on many shows. I personally don't like the word, but hey if other shows can use it like any other word, why not the Emmys?

Maybe they bleepd out more in your time zone, but I heard pretty much the whole thing - can't see how you can say they censored her speech for its content when it's obvious that only a few choice words at the end were cut when it sounded like she was about to drop the f-bomb. But she had already gotten her point across and, being flustered, she was repeating herself by that point. I'm sure it's on youtube already. Check it out.
Working in the broadcast industry I am pretty certain that you can't say G and d together on regular broadcast channels. And I see it bleeped out all the time when I see theatrical releases on cable. The only show I've seen get away with it is Battlestar Galactica when referring to the gods of Kobol.
There were political references all through the broadcast, even in just the clips from the late night talk shows. Why all the "Help, help I'm being oppressed!"?

MaryLou214: You could not have said it better. I hate these awards shows for this reason. They always use there time to start this crap and not what they are there for. I am sure that common folk like us would like to be heard too but we can not.
So Sally shut up and stick to the script.

ctheslayer The Shield uses that word quite frequently. As a matter of fact they were the first ones to use it. Since then there have been other cable channels to use that word along with others.

iamjillian - as I said, it applies to regular UHF/VHF broadcast channels. The Shield is on cable, and the point I was trying to make was that, even on cable, some choose to bleep it out.

I just wanted to say congrats to SF she deserved it. I love her on Brothers and Sisters.
I also want to say I agree with her 100% someone needs to start speaking out. We need to end this war and get our solders home. I thank SF for jumping on board.
