Roy Scheider, who was perhaps best known for his role in the original summer blockbuster, Jaws, died on Sunday at age 75. Though a cause of death has not been released, Scheider for the past two years had been treated for multiple myeloma at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy.

Scheider received two Oscar nominations over his career, for 1971's The French Connection (best supporting actor, as Gene Hackman's police partner), and for 1979's All That Jazz (best actor).

I totally agree. Roy Scheider was qute amazing but a very underrated actor. Too bad Hollywood did not provide him with more juicy roles. He certainly deserved them. Too bad, he never received an Oscar, but I hope he will be remembered somehow at the Academy Awards later this month.

Oh, how sad. I absolutely loved him in Jaws. He had the best line in the entire movie- "we're going to need a bigger boat". I still laugh everytime I hear that. He was a wonderful actor.

This is terribly sad news. I recall that when Bob Fosse died I got the news mixed up and thought that it was Scheider, not Fosse. Sad as I was to hear about Fosse I was glad to hear that I was wrong about Roy. Now that it's actually happened I feel the sadness all over again. A unique and fine actor who should have a larger resume' than he left-he will be mourned and missed.

Roy Scheider's portrayal in "All that Jazz" as Bob Fosse, was nothing short than perfect. I love that film and hope some station will replay it soon.

For me, he will always be that guy who doesn't like the water, needing a bigger boat to fight a big fish.

Rest in Peace

RS was a class act, and I am glad for the body of work he has left us. Like many of you, I love All that Jazz and Jaws. I'd like to think that if I were ever confronted by something as terrifying as Bruce the shark, I could be as brave and quick witted as his Sheriff Brody. Scheider infused the character with equal amounts of plain ol' common sense and vulnerability. I too love that iconic "You're going to need a bigger boat." I also crack up every time I hear "That's some bad hat, Harry!"

Man, I loved this guy. He will be missed. I especially liked his role on SeaQuest... yeah, call me crazy.

In addition to Jaws and even SeaQuest, I also loved him in a movie almost never lauded (probably because people were appalled that the original would be sequelized): 2010. The subject matter is dated now, but it's still a good piece of scifi, and it's such a good film mainly because of him.

Matt:

With respect to those who are fans of "All That Jazz" ....

"Perhaps best known for his role in Jaws"....perhaps!?

You're now leading for "Understatement of the year."

One of his more chilling final roles was as a death row inmate who may have been the father of Det. Bobby Goren on L&O Criminal Intent... He looked pretty ill then but it helped close out that family arc for the Bobby character ( his mother died as well)....

He really did have a great run in the 70's and early 80's but not much since... I also like him as Floyd in 2010... ( too bad he couldn't make it to that year)...

I have loved Roy Scheider since I was little and saw Jaws for the first time. He was a wonderful actor, I also loved him in SeaQuest DSV.

This is a sad day. Hollywood has had too many deaths lately. :(

I can't believe this item is so short. Roy deserves a bigger tribute! I always thought he was such an attractive man! You'll be missed, Roy!
