Ratings: Gladiators Beat Up on Mafia

American Gladiators by Trae Patton/NBC
A few ratings highlights from this Sunday evening:

• The last new Desperate Housewives episode in existence delivered 19.77 million total viewers, a drop of 810,000 from Dec. 2. But I'll be damned if Mrs. McCluskey didn't have me sniffling!

• NBC's American Gladiators averaged 12.04 million over its two-hour premiere, trailing Housewives at 9 in viewers and key demos, then trouncing ABC's Cashmere Mafia at 10 in both measures.

Cashmere Mafia drew 10.72 mil samplers, retaining only 54 percent of the Housewives audience.

I liked Mrs. M's speech at the ballpark. I think it was the same one from 4 Weddings and a Funeral.

I liked Cashmere Mafia but found it horribly predictable. I called the whole, nanny problems, husband problems, calling off the engagement and exploring being a lesbian. I enjoyed it as an hour of distraction and entertaiment, but hope it isn't so predictable from now on.

It's a new show with new episodes, which is more than I can say for most of the other shows I watch, so I will continue watching it for lack of new episodes of everything else.

I wish I knew where to get a copy of that poem read at the ballpark on Desperate Housewives.

As for Cashmere Mafia - I tried it, and will likely watch it for lack of anything better. Maybe it will improve?

Bro's & Ho's (er, Brothers & Sisters) has a new episode this coming Sunday. There was a promo for it during DH or CM (can't recall which).

Great ep of DH. LOL several times. The whole bit with Bree pimping out Andrew for a roof was hilarious - especially when Susan chimed in.

CM was ok. It's another Darren Star production, so it's got the same vibe as Melrose Place and Sex and the City. I will watch it for a few eps to see how it goes, cuz I love Lucy Liu!

suzybeezy-
Here is the poem from last night's DH. They shortened it a bit on the episode last night. We used it at my Grandmother's funeral last year. I love it. I am not sure who it is by though.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the soft star shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

American Gladiators seemed fake! Can any insiders out there back this up?

I watch DH every once in a while but I could only stand 10 minutes of yesterdays episode and then had to turn it off. How this show continues to get almost 20 million viewers astounds me.

Cashmere mafia was alright but I agree with everyone else that it was SO PREDICTABLE. But since there will be nothing else on tv soon, Ill probably end up watching it.

Man, this writers strike is going to be HORRIBLE. I hate REALITY TELEVISION. Sigh, atleast I'll have Lost, Gossip Girl repeats, Sarah Chronicles (hopefully), ANTM, FNL, BSG (march), hate Prison Break this season but will probably end up watching new episodes because of the lack of tv, and other new shows I never got to seeing the first time (Chuck).

My issue with Cashmere Mafia? It did absolutely nothing to hide the fact that it was a Sex and the City clone. Blonde? Check. Redhead? Check. Brunette? Check. Typa-A business woman? Check. Morally casual gal? Check. Flighty woman? Check.

I concur re: the not hiding that Cashmere Mafia was a total SATC clone ... but having also watched the Lipstick Jungle pilot, I have to say that CM was a lot less annoying than that.

Darren Star needs to clone some Melrose Place. I'd be all over some MP'08!

PS: Matt, I like the ratings with my lunch, please & thanks!!! ;o)

I've never seen SATC, but for some reason I ended up tuning into Cashmere Mafia last night. Yuck. I found the characters unlikable and the show itself very predictable. I also thought it was very shallow.

Shows like DH and Gossip Girl do have their vain, soapy moments, but there's still this kind of heart and emotion that makes you care about what happens there. Not on CM.

Cashmere Mafia was disappointing. I would have liked a real mafia story than this mindless nonsense. I didn't care for the actors either but the "lesbian" blond looked familiar. Was she ever in "NYPD BLUE"? The story just didn't hold my interest especially after DH. But pimping her son bothered me alot. What happened to protecting ones children. I didn't find any humor in that storyline. Please get the WGA back to the bargaining table or even a couch.

suzybeezy, the poem is attributed to Mary Elizabeth Frye. You can look her up on Wikipedia to see a longer version.

When Mrs. McCluskey was reciting it, I was trying to figure out where I had heard it before. Know I know that it was on Joan of Arcadia, recited by Joan at the funeral of a boy she knew.

I’m posting this here also because I think it applies.

Based on reactions to my post I realized I forgot to include something. I firmly support the WGA. I think they’re the most talented people in the industry. Nothing has brought me greater joy from entertainment than the writing of fantastic dialogue. If you want to know what would happen if the actors had to go it alone just watch the video of the actors reading the phonebook. We need the writers back. Is everyone else as horrified as I am of the 12 million viewers who turned out for American Gladiators on Sunday? If that’s not a sure sign of the apocalypse I don’t know what is. Producers lets make a deal before we have to sit through more Deal or No Deal. Let’s come together by turning off the television for one night and show the producers we mean business. As a sign of respect to the writers, I will try not to watch anything they don’t support.

I turned off CM before the first commercial break. I found it incredibly boring.

And to the poster who wanted to know if Gladiators was fake? Absolutely! Aren't all reality shows fake? They are in my opinion, which is why I refuse to watch any. And if everyone else refused as well, then the producers would be forced back to the table with the WGA to hammer out a deal. After all, if no one watches their unscripted fare, what else have they got to air?

We, the people, have got the power to end this standoff--simply refuse to watch any reality shows when they come on. I've got better things to do with my time, like watch the DVDs or read many of the books that are beginning to pile up at my house or watch my favorite hockey team. I wish the rest of America would join in with me and boycott all reality.
