Ratings: How Did the Girls Do?
Opening the night with 15.4 million viewers and surging to 20.4 mil by the end of its 90-minute run, Dancing with the Stars was Tuesday's big winner yet again, with House (14.2 million) and NCIS (13.8 mil) placing second and third in the 8 pm hour. The Season 7 premiere of Gilmore Girls, averaging 4.55 million viewers, came in last but gave the CW its best non-Top Model audience to date, was third in women ages 18-34, and actually edged out a Heroes encore in the hour's back half.
At 9 the also-rans were The Unit (holding steady with a hair over 12 million), Law & Order: CI (10.45 mil) and Standoff (up a tick with 8.1 mil), while ABC's Help Me Help You, despite the help of its lead-in, was sampled by just 11.9 mil.
Law & Order: SVU and its 14.3 million viewers took the 10 o'clock title, followed by a horse race between Boston Legal (9.95 mil) and Smith (averaging 9.55 mil, yet losing nearly a mil in its second half).

Matt - thanks for sharing these numbers with us.
Do we know what the ratings for GG were last year? How did they compare? So many folks have said they won't watch anymore, so I'm just curious! I'm thrilled GG did so well!

SVU was reallly brilliant last night. I'm glad to see them hanging in there. Kudos to writers, producers, actors and directors for handling a tough subject and giving us the different sides of a complicated issue.

I believe that GG averaged 4.5 million viewers last year - so the ratings have not suffered.

I have to give a "thumbs up" for Standoff - it was really good last night and I hope it can survive the layoff for the Playoffs!

Those who are missing The Unit are really missing out. LOVE that show! I wouldn't mind seeing it moved from Tuesday night as long as it wouldn't go against 24 when it returns in January!

Are you serious Matt?!? "The Season 7 premiere of Gilmore Girls, averaging 4.55 million viewers, came in last but gave the CW its best non-Top Model audience to date"
That's the best way you could come up with to spin the numbers for the pathetic Gilmore Girls premiere ratings? It was advertised all summer EVERYWHERE and barely lost to 7th Heaven (a show most ppl still don't know has returned). You do realize that you can count the number of original shows on one hand that have premiered on the CW so far! Not to mention the network is only 1 week old!!! So to call GG the best out of those is ridiculous. No accomplishment there, sorry! Wow! I'm speechless at that!
Also, GG beat 7th Heaven's premiere by what?... 5 viewers? So I guess we can say that 7th Heaven is practically one of the best non-Top Model audiences too! It's a good thing networks don't pay Matt V. to write their ratings PR's! Let's see how badly VM flops next Tuesday night also! Can't wait to see how you ATTEMPT to spin those numbers!
And to the person who said GG averaged 4.5 million last year, remember that included reruns too overall. Originals averaged around 5.5 million. So, YES, the ratings did suffer this week! Face it.

tknowzbest, I'll trust Matt's numbers over someone with an ax to grind who is salivating over the possibility that GG might suffer a drop in ratings because of a (relatively) few squeaky wheels on the internet.
And you're a fine one to talk about spin! You hold GG up to the standard set by it being advertised all over the place this summer, yet you don't bother to mention that 7th Heaven's return was just as heavily promoted.
Your aggressive and arrogant "face it" may make you feel better, but some of us aren't ready pass judgment just yet. Can't you just relax and let those of us who are happy at the return of Gilmore Girls enjoy it without having to read a whole new season of petty diatribes because Lorelei isn't walking the narrow line some of you have envisioned for her?
