Ratings: Dancing Sure Beats Boogie-ing
Tuesday's two-hour premiere of Dancing with the Stars' third season was watched by an average of 20 million people, a 19 percent bump from the Season 2 bow and the series' third best ratings ever. As such, Dancing handily bested the 8 o'clock hour's House (watched by 15 million, a 19 percent dip from last week's premiere) and the Big Brother 7: All-Stars finale (8.4 mil), then went on to trump Fox's Standoff (9.3 mil) and CBS' "Rock Star: Your Name Here" (7.1 mil) at 9. ABC's Men in Trees, previewing on a special night, was the 10 pm champ (over SVU and NCIS reruns) with a better-than-Boston Legal tally of 12.4 million.
UPDATE: On Wednesday at 8 pm, Dancing's audience "Tuckered out" a bit, dipping to 16.1 million, but still bested Bones (8.45 mil) as well as Rock Star and Dateline: To Catch a Predator (each of which drew 7.1 mil). At 9 Dateline proper was the winner with 10.7 million viewers, while Justice came in third ? behind a Criminal Minds repeat ? with 7.5 mil, a significant drop from its previous week. Where's the love, SpyDaddy fans?!

As much as I LOVED the House premire last week... I'm hooked on DWTS & other dance shows (like So You Think You Can Dance?) So I'm not suprised that DWTS started out big. If only my VCR worked, I totally would've taped House, since Hugh Laurie is amazing!
For the rest of the shows on that night... eh, I went to sleep after DWTS...

What if we could get Hugh Laurie on DWTS?

I can't believe anyone would want to watch DWTS over House! I think we may need Dr. House to examine a few heads.
Though it was light and fluffy, I enjoyed Men In Trees and will add it to my Friday night viewing.

I'm sorry, but shame on America for eshewing a quality scripted series like House in favor of more celeb-reality nonsense. The continued success of these kind of shows will just make the networks more willing to stuff their schedules with knockoffs rather than nurture fledgling shows. We need to be sending a message to the networks to save this cheap nonsense for the summer seasons.

Is there really much point / meaning to the ratings at this point when some networks' shows are still in repeats from last year? Until the playing field is level with every network putting out thier new content for a given time period the ratings seem pointless for determining success. I suppose, on the other hand if a show doesn't have the full competition and pulls in poor rating that would certainly be a sign of failure. Either way I don't think you can call any new show a success yet until all the competion is rolling. Also, with some shows pilots being viewable ahead of time by various means I would think some new shows first week ratings would take a hit.

Ah, there's room for it all, J-Spot. I watch both House and DWTS. I am a reality junkie. I'm also a junkie of "quality scripted series", dramatic, comedic, and the stuff in between. In short, I am a tv junkie, I know how to record on my vcr (since I'm too poor for Tivo ) and I get pretty ticked off when people tell me there's something wrong with me for watching the shows I like. I would never presume to tell someone what shows/music/art/books/whatever they should like. It takes all kinds, ya know? And as they say, just vote with your remote.

I would like America to stop shaming people. I don't watch DWTS - but can't fault people who do. It's called taste, we each develop our own. House is a great show, but not everyone watches it. I'm with Matt. I bet Hugh Laurie can dance!

Yes, there's room for all TV and all tastes. The only "reality" shows I watch are documentaries, and the only scripted show my sister watches is Gilmore Girls. She's hooked on Survivor, Amazing Race, and DWTS. I don't get the appeal of these shows, and she doesn't get the appeal of a lot of the scripted shows I watch. But we respect each other's different tastes...and we don't live together, so we get along just fine.
