Ratings: CSI Is Taught an Anatomy Lesson
This is where the ratings get fun, folks. Cutting to the chase for a moment, Grey's Anatomy's new time slot (and those multiple video-playing online ads, I suppose) paid off big time, as the ABC drama bested 9 o'clock-hour stalwart CSI in their premieres' head-to-head clash. The overnight tally: Grey's 25.15 million total viewers, CSI 22 mil. Of note: CSI's most recent season finale drew 25.05 mil, whereas Grey's was watched by 20.9 mil. ABC can also claim bragging rights to the droolworthy 18-49 demo, where Grey's snagged 50 percent more than CBS' crime drama.
Rewinding to 8 pm, Survivor: Cook Islands led the pack with 17.7 million, followed by a Grey's clip show (13.4 mil) and NBC's My Name Is Earl/The Office combo (each with about 9 mil). Leapfrogging to 10 pm, we had a bit of a horse race as ER, still showing a pulse in its kazillionth season premiere, admitted an audience of 15.5 million, edging out newbies Shark (CBS, debuting with 14.9 mil) and Six Degrees (ABC, with 13.3 mil).
ADDENDUM: Per MediaWeek.com's Marc Berman, this is the first time a non-season finale of any series has beat CSI since April 1, 2004.

Wow, I have to say I am most surprised by the HUGE numbers both shows put up. I expected both to go down into the teens going up against each other. Those numbers are hugely impressive and I think (that regardless of who won) they both should be proud.

I must agree with DS9Sisko, even though I am thrilled that Grey's beat CSI, ratings can be misleading during season premieres

Whoa -- ABC ruling TV on Thursday nights (well, for one hour anyway), what a concept! Seriously, I had no doubt it would turn out exactly like this. I mean, when you put the hottest show in primetime up against one that is 7 years old (even if it is the reigning #1 champ), the hottest show is going to win. Glad to see all of ABC's non-stop Grey's publicity this summer worked.

Well I am a fan of both shows and watched both shows and there was no question to which show was more entertaining. Grey's wins - handsdown. If I had to pick only one show to watch out of the two - GOODBYE CSI!!

Matt, what happened to ER's commentary with the other TV shows? It's not there and if memory serves, they did a blog for it last season. Is it gone?

Anybody know what's up with the shows repeating on abc.com? I read a press release that said they would be added the day after airing...starting with Grey's and Six Degrees...but they ain't there yet!?!?! Hope it wasn't delayed. I was looking forward to watching them again on my computer. ...and congrats to Grey's! Good to see at least one of the CSI get knocked down.

While Grey's Anatomy was great, you could not BEAT the last 15 minutes of CSI.
Ratings are highly misleading especially with TiVo and other DVR now. Most of my friends chose to watch Grey's instead of CSI, but they still taped it. Give it a few weeks.
I love both shows, but I picked CSI. It's been consistently the better show in my opinion. And I'm quite glad I did.
I think CSI will pull it out in a few weeks once everything settles down. People were hooked from Grey's finale last season, which was more intense than CSI. Next week will be very telling because I have a feeling many people who taped CSI this week will be watching next week and taping Grey's just because of the CSI ending.
I'm 22, and all my friends watched and loved Grey's Anatomy. It's basically a nighttime soap opera, hence it's popularity in the 18-40 demo. I, personally, didn't enjoy the premiere that much. While it was good especially at certain parts (those with Alex and/or Addison), I fastfowarded through a lot of the other stuff.

I'm with the blogger who asked about the ER commentary. I was looking forward to it this a.m. Are we asking too much?

I, too, was looking for an ER blog today. That show was edge of the seat exciting last night. Since I had to be up to go to work at 4 this morning I had promised myself that I would go to sleep and watch it on Tivo today, but I could not turn it off.

i can't believe how much i love tv on thursdays... my name is earl, the office, grey's anatomy, and then to top it all off er. when i first heard grey's was moving to thursdays i was afraid it would compete against er. but this is perfect. i'm so glad people are still turning in. it may not be as good as it once was but its still a lot better than a lot of shows, and trust me i've seen every show since the premiere. and as for csi, thats a show that i can watch in repeats and not feel bad about anything.

Hey, Matt - thanks for bringing us these figures.... And your help in getting an ER Watercooler entry is appreciated!
Will be interesting to see how the numbers play out in the next few weeks. ER clearly benefited from the movement of Without a Trace to Sunday night. But some retooling at the network obviously made a difference - I wasn't sure I was watching the same show for the first 15 minutes or so!
