Ratings: A Bigger Thing, Dance Steps Livelier

A quick ratings recap, now available on a superbly intermittent, not-at-all daily basis:

• ABC's Next Big Thing (8.3 million total viewers) sounds a bit like Robert De Niro and looks like a winner, up 550K versus last week's premiere.

Hidden Palms (1.55 mil) isn't swaying fans, shedding 270 thou from its debut. Maybe last night's freaky tag will get peeps curious? Lead-out One Tree Hill (2.11 mil) was down a bit from last week's measly numbers.

So You Think You Can Dance surged a full mil and dominated at 9 pm, with 10.21 mil viewers.

American Inventor returned to an audience of 7.8 mil — a definite improvement (i.e., up 1.2 mil) over the previous season's finale, but barely half of S1's own premiere draw.

Traveler saw 880,000 viewers hit the road, dipping to 5.44 mil.

I wouldn't expect numbers to be great during the summer months.

I'm not terribly surprised about the decrease for Hidden Palms, but I'm shocked that Traveler's numbers were down!

The Next Big Thing is one of the better reality shows out there. The editing is excellent. All of the judges are professionals and funny. The host is beautiful and good. They honestly point out the act problems with those that aren't good. They perfectly intermix the freaks and the talented in these early rounds.

Glad the ratings are good. American Idol could take some notes from these folks.

I don't know how many viewers were aware that Traveler was even on last night. I found out by accident. I was expecting it to be on Thursday night.

Hope Traveler gets to stay on the air for its full run - not groundbreaking, but it's an intriguing show.

I'm very glad to see Dance's numbers up. It's amazing to watch actual dancers with real talent compete, and if anyone's staying away because it's an Idol knockoff, please reconsider. They've reduced the cringe-inducing clips of bad auditions compared to last year, and I'm hopeful that this means they've listened to fans in other areas, like losing the awful Idol-like "...after the break" crap. Plus, Cat Deeley is simply the best host! Alright, off my soapbox now. But seriously, check it out!

I agree about the editing of "The Next Big Thing." The producers have put it together like a quick-paced story in and of itself, there's flash and fun. The judging is itself a good performance--funny and quick-paced, too, yet substance to what they're saying.

Ooops--correcting both myself and the blog entry--the show is called "The Next Best Thing," not "Big."
