Ratings: The Nine Is Now No. 3
This Wednesday, as Fox took a knee with rained-out World Series coverage....
• Dancing with the Stars' results show set a new season high with 19.85 million total viewers. • Soon-to-be-relocated 30 Rock (6 million) anted up 150,000 more viewers versus last week, while the soon-to-be-MIA Twenty Good Years (5.4 mil) surged 400K. • Per the fast overnights, Lost (16.795 mil) again edged out Criminal Minds (16.589 mil). • One Tree Hill (3.57 mil) bounced back from last week's season low by reclaiming 600,000 heads. • The Nine (8.02 mil) shed another half-mil, thanks in no small part to two million-plus peeps again tuning out at 10:30 pm. Dateline seized the opportunity to claim the hour's No. 2 spot with an audience of 8.68 million.
QUESTION for those who watch (or have tried to watch) The Nine: Why do you think so many are tuning out halfway through each episode? The same nine million-plus seem to check in each week, but then... whammo. Mass exodus. Like clockwork. Please discuss in the comments section.

When will the creators of The Nine realize that we want to see the robbery, not their boring ass lives afterwards?

Yes, God forbid there be a creative concept, season-long suspense, and interesting character study into the aftermath of a crime and the individuals involved. Give the masses easy answers and give them to us NOW or we will whine.

I very heartily believe we won't get a complete season from 'The Nine', so I would really hope ABC made their intentions clear already so that the writers can at least wrap most of it up by the 13th episode.
I'm glad Lost's ratings are basically the same from last week and that it edged (once again) Criminal Minds.

I watch the Nine, and it's a good show. But people like "train wreaks" and get rubbernecks when there is a car accident. Simply put, the creators have all the flashback stuff about the robbery at the beginning. Spread it out or put it at the end. Then you will keep people's attention.
If you can, pass it on to the creators to try and save this show.

I am totally baffled why The Nine isn't doing better other than it might be too intense coming out of Lost. I hope ABC finds a way to keep the show because I truly think it is one of the best shows on television right now.

"When will the creators of The Nine realize that we want to see the robbery, not their boring ass lives afterwards?"
Um. Their lives afterwards are the BASIS of the show. It's a case study of how the robbery affects them and their relationships, so we see parts of the robbery that they're thinking about, that pay off in the present day scenes. It was always the concept of the show that the primary focus would be on the aftermath. If people don't understand this, I'm not quite sure why they're watching the show, because it was clear to me from the beginning and I'm thrilled with it. And really, if they show all of the robbery and no one wants to see the aftermath, then the show would be over. Which is not a good thing either.
As for why they tune out, my best guess is that people try to tune in for the robbery sequecnes at the beginning of the episode and think we'll get to see a lot of it, but when they realize they're wrong they get trigger happy (with the remote.) I staying put for the entire episode and I am loving the show. I hope it sticks around -- it will be heartbreaking if it doesn't.

While I'm enjoying the show, I'm not that surprised about the steep dropoff at the half hour mark.
I think a lot of people keep it on into the first half hour as they're on the phone discussing Lost. Once they're off the phone, they turn it off. I don't think those viewers in the first half are even watching Lost.
It's similar to the Friends/Seinfeld effect. No one was watching the shows in between, but the channel wasn't changing.

I have no idea why people would tune out after watching only the first half hour of The Nine. I think the show is fantastic. I think the guess that they are keeping their set on after Lost and not even watching the Nine is as good as any. It is very bizarre. I wish more people were watching it. The writing and the acting are wonderful. Of course we want to know what happened at the bank, the same way we want to know how they're going to get off the island on Lost. To me the character's stories make it worth watching on both shows.

I think it's disheartening that people keep tuning out at 10:30 because on last night's episode, they finally showed us robbery sequences throughout the whole episode and not just at the beginning. Last night's episode was the best one so far, imo.

While The Nine looks good, I can't bring myself to watch it. I blame this on the commercials and promotions for it. They are so in your face: "You don't know what we went through in there!" Lost was never advertised so in your face.

I've no idea why people keep tuning out, except that maybe there's a half-hour show they want to watch that's on at the same time?
I'm not watching. I loved the pilot, but like every other non-established series with a full-season story arc that launched this fall, I'm waiting until the network announces its plan for it (either cancellation or full pick up, at which time I'll start watching from the beginning). I'm looking at Kidnapped and The Nine right about now

Anyone turning The Nine off halfway through is missing out on great tv. I found it fascinating to see how the different hostages reacted to the robber needing a transplant. You would THINK that no one would care if he died. But it is amazing how many of them wanted him to live, and pay for what he did. Hope this show makes it. Although, I have to agree that it is a little hard for the brain to deal with two intense shows one after the other.

I think you nailed it. Everyone is ditching The Nine to catch Fresh Prince on Nickelodeon.

This is one of the best new shows of the year. But the pace is very deliberate (one of the reasons I like it so much) and there's really no rush to the end of the hour like there is with some of the other shows in this genre. I do feel bad for people who need that. They're missing out on a great cast, story and show.
