Prison Break Star Writes From Prison

File this under "life imitating Fox." Prison Break star Lane Garrison has written a letter to his good friends at Access Hollywood from jail. The actor was sentenced to three years and four months in San Diego's Donovan State Prison in October for drunk driving.

If nothing else, Garrison appreciates the irony of his situation, describing to Access how he and his cellmates were allowed to watch the season premiere of Prison Break. "It felt like an out of body experience as I stood around a crowd of tattooed felons watching Michael Scofield trying to escape," he says.

His reality, of course, has been more than just TV time with the guys. "This has been the hardest year of my life," he wrote. "I hope people, young and old, are learning from my mistakes and what can happen when you drink and drive. I have much to say about the pain I've felt and seen inside of prison. It has been eye-opening and a harrowing experience." — Mickey O'Connor

I really do hope that people learn from this high profile situation. I feel certain that Lane is a changed man and would like to see him become and advocate for education about drinking and driving.

He's a liar, a drug user, an alcohol abuser and a killer. He's right where he should be...I am still sorry for the family and friends of his victims.

Does this seem to anyone else like a bid for him to stay in the public eye while he's in prison?

Yes.

Aw geez...I don't approve of Garrison's actions any more than anyone else does. I am terribly saddened by the tragedy of lives lost and ruined. But can't the possibility of his actually being sorry be taken seriously? He's responsible for people's deaths. Wouldn't he have to be the worst kind of psychopath or murderous thug for it not to affect him? I don't imagine he sleeps very well at night. And I don't think that will change after he completes his sentence.

Maybe, DaMess, but Access Hollywood isn't exactly the classiest place to issue a non-attention-seeking, genuine apology. Everyone who ends up on those Hollywood news magazine shows is angling for some sort of publicity. For it to come off as less desperate, he could have done some sort of public service announcement, a statement through his publicist, a private apology to the families involved.

I agree with you Dianora about the nature of Access Holywood. But since that kind of program is where you find the most continued coverage of stories like Lane's once they move out of the time frame of real news it was logical for him to think that that was one of the better formats for reaching the most people who are still interested in his story. Being a member of a generation raised on such shows it is not impossible or even unlikely that he considered it a legitimate "news" outlet.

Also...having made a public statement-which is a perfectly logical thing for someone in the public eye and about whom public statements are going to be made-does not mean he hasn't made the more private apologies and statments you have mentioned. One does not preclude the other.

And, clumsy handling of this situation or not, do you really think that Garrison is not truly sorry that he is responsible for the death of someone? How far off the social scale of reason would one have to be to not feel so? It's a reasonable assumption to make about almost anyone that they would be devastated by such an event.
