Poll: Mel Is Still Beloved, Tom Cruise Still Bewilders

Further proof that people are just plain weird: In a new Gallup poll, only 12 percent of respondents said they would go out of their way to see Tom Cruise movies now, while 26 percent said they'd go the extra mile to catch a Mel Gibson flick. Furthermore, 34 percent said they wouldn't see a Cruise pic period, while only 15 percent have sworn off Gibson. Elsewhere on the chart, the far-less-controversial Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon were ranked our favorite actor and actress. No doubt my personal faves, Mark Feuerstein and Judy Greer, were right behind them.

Why would you say wierd? Not only has Tom Cruise gone off the deep end, but he is also not a talented actor. His attempts at drama (Eyes Wide Shut and Vanilla Sky) were met with very mediocre reviews.

As far as Tom Hanks coming in ahead - he is talented and diverse. He also manages to maintain a (seemingly) normal life.

Well, those are two brilliant performers who will come into their own if they haven't. I personally love Mark Feuerstein, myself.

I think people are tired of the gossipy tabloidy garbage telling them who to like and not to like, who to spurn and whose baby to ooo and awww over. To me it doesn't say weird as much as it says, thankfully, that people can think for themselves. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I'm not a Tom Cruise fan myself, & I don't think I'm weird because of it. I do think that Tom is weird however. I haven't given up hope on Mel yet.

I totally get that poll.

At least Mel was drunk when he made that one particular error. I am skeptical now as to who he is in real life, but am willing to believe that it may have been the only thing we know: he made obnoxious, offensive comments when drunk. Plus, Mel is far, far more talented as an actor and director than Tom could ever hope to be.

Cruise has totally turned me off, as he acts as if his opinions should matter to the general public because he is an actor. His appeal was always the personal, not the acting chops.

Christina Aguilera comes to mind. She was behaving insane for awhile, but she has enough real talent that she overcame it with talent. Then, she grew up a bit and quit acting as weird. Her songs can be over the top for me, but still I get the real appeal.

That said, MI-3 was far, far better than the first two, and probably the anti-Tom backlash is why it did not do better despite the decent entertainment talent in that movie (not Tom per se). But really, the first two were not very good anyway.

As an aside, read some stuff about scientology. I thought people were joking about the alien stuff in scientology. Seriously.

I'm with you there, Mel is very talented, Tom not so much.

I'm with the crowd on this. Personality and talent (like bigotry and talent) are not mutually exclusive. While I don't at all aprove of the statements Mel Gibson made (and being drunk is not a good enough excuse for me) his beliefs don't have anything to do with his talents as a film maker. I figure anyone who has seen and acclaimed Gone With The Wind or Birth Of A Nation despite the blatant racism of the latter and the implicit racism of the former should be able to understand that.

I have to admit to never having liked Cruise as an actor. He has been effective in a couple of good movies that might have been much better if they'd starred someone else (All The Right Moves, Born On The 4th Of July) but he has only really impressed me in one film-The Last Samurai-and I can only explain that by citing the principle that says that if you put a hundred monkeys in a room and give them paint brushes and canvas that one of them will eventually come up with a masterpiece. Maybe now that the world's teenage crush on Cruise appears to be over he will fade away into Richard Grieco-land.

I liked kyrjar's Christina Aguillera example. I completely agree. I've never been a fan of the type of most of the music she has made but I have always thought that she was a good singer. She's only gotten better. She seems to have found out that having a career she can be proud of is more satisfying than running around L.A drunk and pantyless. I have no hope for the spectacularly untalented Britney Spears to learn that lesson. But maybe Lindsay Lohan, if she ever finds out that the sun actually does shine whether she is up to see it or not, will.
