Paul Newman Pal Denies Cancer Quote; AP Stands Firm

In recent days, several media outlets reported that Paul Newman, 83, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is receiving outpatient treatment at a hospital in New York. On Wednesday, the AP quoted writer A.E. Hotchner, a longtime business partner and neighbor of Newman's, as saying the actor told him about having the disease some 18 months ago: "I know that it's a form of cancer. And he's dealing with it."

Hotchner has since denied making that statement, claiming he has "no knowledge of any diagnosis," but the AP is standing by its story.

Last month, Newman bowed out of directorial duties for a production of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, citing health reasons that were not specified.

Newman responded to previous reports on the cancer with a cryptic, non-confirming message delivered by his spokesman: "Newman says he's doing nicely." — Anna Dimond

Whatever the "story" is, it's no one's business except Mr. Newman and his family. It's called privacy and it should be respected.

Agreed PatMC. Paul Newman has always been the classiest of guys and deserves every ounce of privacy. If he IS sick, I wish him all the best. I've always been a huge fan of his but yes, ultimately leave him alone.

I wish Mr. Newman well and hope he and his family are granted their privacy.

Praying for him...

And why is this "friend" even speaking to the media about Mr. Newman?!
I'd drop this friend if I was Mr. Newman.

I agree. He's a classy guy, a private person, and an excellent actor who's given me years of joy with his performances. I hope the media let's him be and WHATEVER it is let him do it his way with peace and honor and the hopes and prayers of millions of people that wish him well.

Absolutely agree 100% with all of you. IMHO, Mr. Newman shouldn't even have bothered to dignify the hoopla with his response. If it is true, I will pray with all my heart for him and his family.

I prefer to think he's researching a role or a future project.
Whatever his endeavors, I pray for his success & joy.

Why is it always that these supposed "friends" can manage a soundbite out of "concern" but can't keep their mouth shut out of respect. Paul Newman is a legend and a class act. I wish him well, whether he's in good health or not.

You keep bringing up how Paul Newman cherishes his privacy, yet you keep digging. What if this was your father or brother? For God's sake, stop and leave him alone. By continuing and not letting him TRULY have privacy, you show everyone you value your right to gossip over Paul Newman, his life, and his family. If he truly is ill, WHAT IS IT that makes your little show more important than a person's privacy when he or she is ill or possibly at the end of their life? I'd really like to know.

It will truly break my heart if and when Paul leaves this mortal coil. He has always been one of my very favorite actors. He is so low-key he makes acting look effortless...the reason probably he was overlooked for the oscar several times...The Hustler and Cool Hand Luke come to mind. I also admire him and Joanne for having one of the most enduring marriages in Hollywood. We will truly lose a giant when he goes....:_|

What is it any of our business what he is going through right now? I love Paul Newman. I mean LOVE him. I have two pictures of him in my living room as part of the decoration, but it is none of my business and by addressing it in the media, it is making whatever his personal struggle that much more difficult.

On a brighter note, if you want to see him at his best, check out "The Long Hot Summer". I think this is the movie where he first met Joanne.

I'll always remember the day, eons ago, when there was still an Alexanders in Manhattan, and I was on my way there one lunch hour walking along Park Avenue and there on the street walking toward me was Paul Newman in a beige v necked pullover sweater and chinos and I was bug eyed looking at him saying to myself should I say hello, can I say hello, will he be mad if I say hello and next thing I know we'd passed each other and he had a great big grin on his face and his blue eyes sparkling, and I KNEW he'd seen me, knew what I was thinking, and was probably glad that I let him be. I'll cherish that forever, and as I said above I hope we'll let him be now.

This information is covered under HIPPA guidelines for patient privacy! As several have said, it's no one's business but Paul Newmans!

As someone who worked in the medical field for 20 years...whoever linked that information should be fired...

...and I wonder how these 'news' agencies would feel if THEIR medical history was all over the Internet, in print, etc!

Give the man his privacy and dignity!

"but the AP is standing by its story." You'd think that there had been a serious breach of national security the way the AP is playing this. What an assinine statement to make. If Paul Newman is sick, and wants to deny it, then it's his perogative. He doesn't owe anyone an explanation about his health, least of all the media. If his friend? is talking to the media about Newman's health, I'd seriously think about kicking that guy to the curb.
