Owen Wilson Pal: Don't Drug Me into the Blame Game

The downward spiral thatl ed Owen Wilson to ultimately attempt to take his life on Aug. 26 was perhaps helped along by the film funnyman "hanging out around the wrong people," sources tell Us, with several singling out actor Steve Coogan. Courtney Love, recalling her own past association with the Brit bad boy, tells the mag, "I was just out of rehab and he was right there with the drugs." When Coogan cozied up to Wilson (both costarred in Night at the Museum), "I tried to warn Owen," says Love. "I hope... that Owen stays the hell away from that guy." In response, Coogan tells TV's Extra, "These accusations are unfounded, unhelpful and hurtful to all concerned. We are taking legal advice."

So bad was Wilson's drug dependency, Us reports, that pal Woody Harrelson staged an intervention in May that, alas, didn't take.

You must be commended on honouring Owen's wishes for privacy. Yes. I'm being sarcastic.

I know — and I'm the only one! Yes. I'm being sarcastic.

If other celebrities have been commenting to the press on it first then they were the ones not honoring his wishes. Matt was only posting what the said celebrities have already publicly stated. No need for attacks.

I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect no one to report on this story just because Wilson asked for privacy. I would hope it would mean that there wouldn't be paparazzi in hordes around the hospital and trying to call him constantly. But that's probably unrealistic too.

Bottom line: I hope Wilson is getting the help he needs, and now I understand the problem much better.

Like I told someone else, it's human nature to be curious when stuff like this happens. I know I've been watching the news and plan on buying the upcoming issue of People magazine.

There's just a fine line between reporting news that the public is interested in and invading privacy. The papparazzi outside the hospital is a definate no-no. Another no-no is this p---ing contest between Love and Coogan over what happened. That reaks of disrespect to me.

I think it's expected for the media to comment. What I find sad is that all the celebrities who ask for privacy when it's there problem being discussed are the ones who are happy to oblige with a quote to the first infotainment reported to shove a microphone in their face.

Am I the only one who asks the questions... Who the hell is this Steve Coogan guy? And what the hell is he doing walking around Hollywood with pockets full of drugs? Does he pimp 'hos as well?

And lastly... he sounds like a fun guy... where can I get his number?

;)

Coogan is some British actor. I've never seen anything he's in.

So that guy Coogan says the accusations against him are "unfounded, unhelpful and hurtful". That's not exactly saying that they're false. Sounds like the guy is being caught, and trying to side-step it. On the other hand, Owen Wilson is a big boy and well over the age of reason. He should be able to make decisions on his own. I'll bet Owen's drug problems are what pushed Kate Hudson away. That would explain alot. Too bad for Owen. I hope he recovers.

Steve Coogan's the creator/star of the series Knowing Me, Knowing You, I'm Alan Partridge and Saxondale.

Anyone who loves Ricky Gervais' David Brent needs to get to know Alan Partridge.

Coogan's been around (in the UK at least) for quite a while - his career started back when Us Magazine was a monthly piece of harmless Hollywood fluff, not the soul-deadening parade of weekly tabloid excrement it is these days.

Woody Harrelson is staging interventions now?

Isn't that a little like making Hulk Hogan's son a driving instructor?

And regarding the whole "respect my privacy" thing, some of you people need to get off your high horses.

Stars have no problem using the press when they have a movie or show to promote.

Of course, the press shouldn't actively do anything to hinder or interfere with Wilson's recovery. However, there is nothing wrong with respectfully reporting the latest facts and developments in a situation like this -- as Matt is doing.

It is a news story when a fairly successful actor possibly attempts to commit suicide -- whether Owen Wilson likes it or not.

It is unrealistic to expect the media to look the other way while he gets his house in order.

Chappy, I'm with you - if Woody Harrelson is staging an intervention for you, serious warning sirens should be going off!

I truly hope that Owen gets the help that he needs.

I truly hope that Wilson will recover alright, and I wish him well, he is one of my favorite actors. But when someone in the entertainment field tells the press that they want their privacy, I think they are being totally unrealist and hypocritical. They are in a PUBLIC field of work, the entertainment business is a field where there is no PRIVACY because there is always someone out there trying to find out more about a PUBLIC person. It's part of their business to have publicity, no matter what they do, and they know that it is the PUBLIC who make them what they are or without them, they would not have a career. So, unless someone in show business doesn't want to be a PUBLIC figure, they should not get into the Entertainment industry.
