It's Official: Johnny Depp Is Fit to Be Todd
In what will be their sixth collaboration, Tim Burton will direct Johnny Depp in a film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd, about a murderous 19th-century barber who seeks revenge over his wrongful imprisonment. Depp, says a DreamWorks spokesperson, is expected to do his own singing. Lemme guess — in the style of Keith Richards?

OK this has been longer in coming than Sweeney's revenge on those who wronged him. I just hope that Depp leaves all his nutty Willy Wonka-isms behind.

Why do I keep picturing Alfalfa crooning "The Barber of Seville"?

No one is more perfect for this than Depp! Now if Burton leaves the story in tact it should be good. I am a Burton fan, much of the time, but he wanted to put Superman in Black plastic or something. Hopefully there will be none of that sort of creativity.

Raven and I were just talking about this (you know, like, in person, the old-fashioned way), and we agree they need to play it (relatively) "straight" and not go all Willy Wonka on it.
