New Star Trek Film Checks Off Its Chekov
Anton Yelchin in Alpha Dog courtesy Universal Pictures
Russian-born Anton Yelchin, whose recent credits include Alpha Dog and TV's Huff, is in talks to play Pavel Chekov, the eventual navigator of the USS Enterprise, in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film, says the Hollywood Reporter. Unreliable sources tell me the audition process involved having a Ceti eel implanted in your ear. Yowch.
Yelchin will join the recently cast Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk (Josh Duhamel? Is Nathan Fillion too old?), Bones, Uhura (yikes, we're going to get Rihanna, aren't we)?, Sulu, and Scotty. Abrams is expected to sign big names to play the villain and a Federation captain.
What, no Hayden Panettiere as Yeoman Rand?!

If they go with the old school uniforms, then her cheerleader outfit would work just fine.

Then that would mean Masi Oka as Sulu. He already plays the son of Takei's character on Heroes.
Maybe Beyoncé Knowles as Uhura. She could sing over the shipwide intercom system when not answering hailing frequencies.
And the new communicators will have cameras, games, text messaging, MP3s, voice mail...

Well here's the rundown people. At the time the original series started production Shatner and Nimoy were both 35 years old. Nathan Fillion, Michael Shanks, and much rumored Matt Damon are 36 years old. Josh Duhamel is 34 years old. Michael Vartan is 38. Zach Quinto is only 30, just 5 years behind the original age of Spock. So while those are good choices Abrams is casting right on the age line. Since he's there anyways why not Gary Sinise as Bones? He's 52. DeForest Kelley was 46 in 1966, as was James Doohan. Not bad for Sinise. James McAvoy however is only 28. Yelchin is 18 years old and Walter Koenig was 30.

Considering the bags Gary Sinese has under his eyes, he would be perfect as Bones, as DeForest Kelly had heavy bags under his, but was still a handsome man.

That rationale also justifies Matt Le Blanc as Bones.

Matt, you're a Star Trek geek. I love it! I am so excited about this movie, and it hasn't even started filming yet. It's going to be a long year ...

Who cares about Star Trek....let it go already. Let it died for once. Oh wait it did when the original series was cancelled after just three years.
I know whatever monster comes out of the gate isn't going to be Gene Roddenberry's vision.
Let Star Trek dies okay people ?

The perfect Uhura is Freema Agyeman (Martha from Doctor Who). I bet she could swing the American accent. She would be perfect!

The difference between Gary Sinise and Matt LeBlanc is that Sinise can act. And I'm probably in the minority but I don't need to see Michael Shanks for a long time.

Tkangaroo, why does Freema need an American accent? This is supposed to be a multi-national, mutil-world crew.
Her British accent would be perfect.

Josh Duhamel would be a perfect Kirk. Anyone who has followed him knows he has quite a bit of wry humor infused in his delivery, and that is one thing the original had-it took itself seriously, but not too seriously. Something subsequent spinoffs sometimes forget.

All the talk about the Original Cast's age in Season One is moot. This movie is meant to take place as much as a decade before TOS. Matt Damon recently said J.J. Abrams told him his was about a dozen years too old to play his Kirk (Damon is 36). According to the casting sheet, they're looking for a McCoy who is much closer in age to Kirk as well. I've gotten the impression this movie is intended to be a mild reboot ... not as extreme as the new BSG's reimagining, but definitely different.

Benjermin McKinsey (SP)that played Ryan Atwood on the OC be a perfect Captain Kirk. He's short like William Shatner. I think it would be a good pick. Isn't he is his last 20's.
