New Batman DVD Sets Stage for Dark Knight's Arrival
Batman Gotham Knight courtesy Warner Home Video
The latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight, doesn't open until July 18, but an animated DVD out 10 days earlier should satisfy any Caped Crusader cravings. Batman Gotham Knight helps set the stage for Christopher Nolan's feature film, with a series of six interlocking animé tales. The voice cast of this visually stunning interpretation of the DC Comics legend includes Kevin Conroy, who played the title character in Batman: The Animated Series and later in Justice League, ER's Parminder Nagra, Ugly Betty's Ana Ortiz and ex-CSI star Gary Dourdan. Ortiz plays Detective Anna Ramirez,a part she was also up for in The Dark Knight. She lost out to Monique Curnen but got a unique second chance for the animated version. "I audition for so many things, it all just sort of rolls off your back," she says. "But I was glad that I got to play her one way or the other. And I get to put my own spin on it." She worked closely with Dourdan, who plays Ramirez's partner, Detective Crispus Allen. "To have him in there with me, everything just flowed a little bit easier," says Ortiz, who had never voiced an animated character before this project. "He is just a great scene partner and it made it that much cooler for me." —Danny Spiegel

Ortiz plays Detective Anna Ramirez,a part she was also up for in The Dark Knight. . . .
She worked closely with Dourdan, who plays Ramirez's partner, Detective Crispus Allen.
Okay . . . who's the homophobe at Warner who didn't want Renee Montoya to be gay and thought that we'd be too dumb to notice the name change on what is essentially the same character minus any references to her sexual orientation?

Doesn't Montoya show up after Bruce has been Batman for awhile? (I'm going by the animated series, here). Remember, TDK is shortly after BB, which tells how Batman came to be. Using that argument, Montoya's not in the picture. Yet.

Definitely heading out to Best Buy after work today to get the steelbook Collector's Edition!
(And, yes, I agree w/ShutUpRob about the character's name being changed from Renee Montoya [who was introduced in Batman: TAS and ended up being written into the comics]. Although, I am wondering about the Crispus Allen character... given where he is now in the DCU, it'll be interesting to see where they take him.)

Okay, not to beat a dead horse here, or split hairs, but if Montoya was introduced in B:TAS, then Bats was already the Dark Knight for at least six or seven years. And This DVD takes place between BB and TDK, meaing he's still relatively a "new" Batman. Maybe Montoya will come later? Remember, she started out as a beat cop.
Just Sayin'.

Can you tell I'm uber excited?

Sanjeeta: The fact that Montoya was a character on B:TAS before she became a (gay) character in the comics makes no difference. Regardless of the "universe" that the Ramierez character is in, she's clearly based on Montoya, right down to being partners with Crispus Allen from the comics series Gotham Nights, where, again, she was gay and remains gay in her new guise as the new Question. The homophobia in the re-naming of the character for the DVD is blatant. (And FTR, I'm straight.)
