NBC Takes Knight Rider for Another Spin

"Michael, I don't like the sound of this.... "

NBC has put director Doug Liman in the driver's seat of a two-hour TV-movie that will reboot that '80s show Knight Rider and ideally serve as a backdoor pilot for a new series. ("No, Michael, not the back door.... ") Variety reports that the plan is to air the flick later this season, and if successful/not entirely abysmal, have a new series ready for fall 2008. Dave Andron (Raines) is penning the script and will exec-produce with Liman and Dave Bartis (Heist).

The vision for this redo is to take advantage of current TV special effects to allow K.I.T.T. some Transformers-esque shapeshifting. (But no, Hoff, no amount of state-of-the-art trickery will get you your old job back.)

Speaking of The Hoff... Matt, did you also hear that Ryan Seacrest is producing a new show chronicling the highs and lows of the newly dating Hoffmeister.. called Tales From The Hoff?

Isn't this like a sign of the apocalypse or something?

Yeah, I've had that press release sitting on my desk but each time I start to write it up for you all, ratings or some other larger priority comes in.

I think I was there for that meeting to bring Knight Rider back. Here's how it went... You know, they released all those great 80's TV shows on DVD and they are selling well. And did you see how well Transformers did at the theater. I have a great idea for us to make some quick money. Let's mangle the classics and remake it. That will surely give us 3 episodes before it gets cancelled.

I think you're a little confused. This article is about remaking Knight Rider.

But they've already TRIED to bring back Knight Rider once before....what was it called? Knight Rider 2000, I think?

Granted, if Bionic Woman, Battlestar Gallatica and the various movies do well...that means KR will too???

I dunno...if they change it up a bit, make KITT a bit more transformerish and the lead actor is charming enough it could work, but do we want it to work is the next question.

Can anyone in Hollywood come up with an original idea? I know...Stupid Question!

I loved Raines; perhaps the script will be witty, but do we really need Michael Knight back on TV?

I'm really curious to see how they'll work this. I'm one of the 3 people in the world who actually think the Hoff is still entertaining. We need more Hoff.

People really need to stop blaming Hollywood for all these re-makes. Hollywood does not exist to entertain, nor does it exist to irritate, it's all about making money. Trust me if the public wasn't eating this stuff up, there'd be more original concepts. The problem is that people aren't so willing to try new things.
