NBC Shifts into Top Gear

I can practically see our BBC-enthusiast copy editor, Michelle, smiling at this headline. (Or, perhaps, fearing the worst.) NBC has ordered a pilot for a U.S. adaptation of Top Gear, to be produced by BBC Worldwide Prods., says the Reporter. Like the original from across the pond, the series will offer a mix of cars, humor and celebrities. Casting is currently under way for hosts, with the pilot set to be filmed in secret in front of an audience at a Los Angeles-area racetrack.

This is a fantastic idea as long as they can keep the same premise. Top Gear is a very funny and at the same time informative show. If they don't get hosts like Top Gear already has it will fail. You have to have the right chemistry. Please no top model hosts, I want real people like on BBCAmerica. Maybe they could get some Englishmen to do the job. I look forward to NBC's attempt.

Oh Mattovich, am I that transparent? This is bloody fabulous news! But I can't imagine an appropriate American host for it -- the snark is so thoroughly English. Also, last year it was named one of the most-pirated shows of 2007, so it'll be kind of sad to see it go mainstream... not that I'm complaining, mind you. Stealing is wrong, kids.

There you are, Micheller! As for the host, they plan to announce him/her at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Fortunately, I think Tom Bergeron will be busy with DWTS. - MWM

I LOVE this show so they had better do it right. It seems we ruin more British Shows than we improve.

I adore Top Gear, and am so wary of American producers trying to copy great (and not so great) British shows. The interplay between Richard, Jeremy and James is part of what makes the show great, and that will be hard to replicate. Here's hoping it doesn't sour.

It is a great idea.

At least the studio is trying to entertain the audiences.

What have WGA and its supporters done for the audiences lately?
