NAACP Awards Play the Grey's Card

Grey's Anatomy was the big winner at the 38th Annual NAACP Image Awards, taking home a quartet of statues, including lead actor in a drama series for Isaiah Washington. The lightning-rod serial also came out on top in the best-drama, supporting-actress (Chandra Wilson) and writing (Shondra Rhimes' "It's the End of the World" episode) contests.

ABC's Ugly Betty followed with three wins of its own, in the comedy-series, supporting-actress/comedy (Vanessa Williams) and writing/comedy categories.

Among TV's other winners were Close to Home's Kimberly Elise (lead actress/drama), Everybody Hates Chris' Tyler James Williams and Girlfriends' Tracee Eliis Ross (in the lead-acting/comedy slots), House's Omar Epps (supporting actor/drama), and Girlfriends' Reggie Hayes (supporting actor/comedy). A couple of times it looked as though Isaiah was going to say something about the controversy swirling around him, but he didn't. I just shook my head at the choice of him to receive (of ALL things) an IMAGE award! (sigh)

It was a great show, though! Soledad O'Brien's tribute was truly highlighted by India Arie's amazing rendition of "I Am Not My Hair"! So glad I was recording!!! And Bono's speech was inspiring enough to almost bring tears to my eyes!

All that, with the opening number, which was awesome, and the In Memorium section, voiced by the inspiring voice of Mavis Staples! Anyone who missed this special, I feel sad for you! :)

Congratulations to Isaiah Washington, Chandra Wilson, Shonda Rhimes and the entire cast of Grey's Anatomy. Isaiah's award is completely appropriate. It was given for his portrayal of an African American man who is a professional, is well respected, has high standards, and is faithful to the woman he loves. Isaiah's portrayal of Preston Burke is the image of minority men that the NAACP should award. Thank goodness the NAACP is able to look beyond the media trumped up on-set fray and award the performance. In spite of living through a nightmare the last four months, Isaiah continues to give beautiful performances on GA week in and week out. It was wonderful to see the standing ovation and to hear the cheers of support for Isaiah at last night's show. Preston Burke is by far my favorite character and Isaiah my favorite actor on the show. Well done, Isaiah. Don't let the haters get to you. You have fans who love you and support you and actually know how to forgive you for a mistake. We are all flawed including the most outspoken of your detractors. Your image has not been tarnished in my book.

NAACP supposed to promote diversity and tolerance but it ended up giving award to one of their own that demonstrates intolerance.

What a shame!!

I don't believe in what NAACP did, does, or will do!!!

TV Gord, i am not sad at all missing this show!

That's all fine, Burke Backer. I was just pointing out it was a very good show, other than the ironic fact that a BIGOT was awarded an NAACP award.

You can disagree about whether it was a good show, but you can't disagree about Washington's (admitted by him!!!) lack of character.

:)

And as for the character he plays...

It was given for his portrayal of an African American man who is a professional, is well respected, has high standards

He was a surgeon who was complicit in passing himself off as a surgeon, even though he had a debilitating hand injury. Just what point are you trying to make???
