Bill Murray Slapped with Restraining Order & Divorce

Normally, Hollywood divorces don't come as much of a shocker. But we definitely didn't see this one coming!

Jennifer Butler Murray has officially filed for divorce from her Oscar-nominated hubby, Bill Murray, after more than 10 years of marriage – and she's not keeping it a secret as to why she wants out. According to People, the 42-year-old wife and mother of four wants the marriage ended on the grounds of drug addiction, physical abuse, adultery and abandonment.

Jennifer Murray is also requesting a restraining order be placed on her husband, alleging that the actor had unhealthy addictions to alcohol, marijuana and sex — and the real kicker — he "hit his wife in the face and then told her she was 'lucky he didn't kill her.'" Say it ain’t so Venkman! Are you as shocked as we were to hear the news? — Gina DiNunno

Wow...I didn't even know (or care?) he was married. If her charges are true, that's a damn shame.

Shocked by Bill Murray? Not so much.

While not minimizing the horrors of spousal abuse, I'll reserve my judgement until I hear from the other side. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle, as it usually is.

I didn't see it coming, but I can't say that I'm surprised; public personae can be very different from the private. Truthfully, I can see Bill Murray with an addictive personality, but I'm saddened to hear it.

Lets string him up now, guilty until proven innocent, that's generally the TVGuide.com readers' way.

As my username implies, I'm a big fan of the show that gave Mr. Murray his big break having loved Nick the Lounge singer with his various versions of contemporary pop songs. I also know how difficult he was behind the scenes on many occasions from reading some books about the show. So his recent publicity isn't shocking but a little surprising since I thought he'd learn by now how to handle his public and private life. Despite this, I'm still an admirer of his work (though I admit I haven't seen much of his recent work since his compelling role on Lost in Translation).

Oh, how I long for the days when people didn't feel the need to issue press releases over such deeply personal matters. It's getting to the point where it's more surprising when someone shows a little self-respect!

Another article I read stated that Bill Murray did not hire a publicist (a typical move for celebrities involved in divorces) prior to filing for divorce, which seems to indicate that he did not at all expect these types of allegations to be made against him. That also makes me believe that these allegations are at best half-truths. I do not really know what Mr. Murray is (or was) like off-screen, but I just hope that whatever is revealed will not tarnish my admiration of him as an actor and comic.

Spousal abuse isn't a very real thing that should never be tolerated and it can occur in some seemingly unlikey households. In one of Jack Paar's books he mentions that Hugh Downs had a tendency to get physical with his wife "every now and then" (I'll find the source and post it soon). But thanks to Denise Richards I have a tendency to wait for the video before I judge something like this. I'll never forget what one comedian (I think it was Arsenio, might have been D.L. Hughley) said regarding Robin Givens assertion that she'd been assaulted by Mike Tyson: "If he hit her, don't you think she'd be dead?"

I'm not surprised, but I can't put my finger on why. Bill Murray is one of those people whose work I have enjoyed, but have never wanted to meet in person. I just find something about him to be off-putting.

Divorce of those you thought were happy is always sad. HOWEVER - only two people will ever know if any of these charges against him are true and you and I are not those two. So much "crap" surrounds these "Hollywood" break-ups that it is best to ignore all of it and wish the couple well.
