Movie News: Those Pesky Fannings and More
Dakota and Elle Fanning by Steve Granitz/ WireImage.com
Future moguls Dakota and Elle Fanning have left My Sister's Keeper, a film about a couple who conceives a child (Elle) to be a genetic match for her ailing sis(Dakota). Apparently, Dakota didn't want to shave her head to play sick. Diva! Oscar nom Abigail Breslin and newcomer Sofia Vassileva will fill the void.... Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Jason Leigh are exes in Spread, a sex comedy from director David MacKenzie (Young Adam).... After a series of complicated acquisitions and transfers of the rights to produce the first film adaptation of the Watchmen comic book series, Twentieth Century Fox is suing Warner Brothers over their planned flick, which stars Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman. — Mickey O'Connor

I know that it's only hair, but the thought of Sofia Vassileva shaving off her beautiful hair is almost physically painful. Abigail is the non-annoying Breslin, so I might actually go see the movie.

Since when is Sofia Vassileva a newcomer? I remember her in the Eloise movies at least 5 years ago. And isn't she one of the daughters on Medium?

Not wanting to shave your head seems like an awfully stupid reason to turn down a role in a movie based on a best-selling book. I haven't read it, but it seems like it has the potential to be all dramatic and award-winning. While I certainly wouldn't shave my head for my job, I'm not commanding the sort of money Dakokta Fanning probably already is at her young age.

Wow! My Sister's Keeper sounds like a 'tween version of that hideous Juliet Lewis/ Diane Keaton pile of garbage that came out years ago. Dakota's folks most likely passed on a concept that seems pretty awful and the shaved head thing was the icing on the cake.

Well, maybe she didn't want to shave her hair because of a potential conflict with another movie she'd want to make. Or maybe it's because she's 14. But I wouldn't call that decision "stupid".

Do go reread what I said. I called the reason stupid, not the decision itself. If she wanted to be able to make another movie instead, by all means, that's a more business-minded reason. Although they certainly have wigs and hair extensions and plenty of other ways to make her look appropriate in another role.

Think of what fodder Kathy Griffin would have if Dakota really did shave her head for the role - she could be doing shout outs left and right for the "poor little cancer victim"...and so soon after her stint in rehab...

Abigail Breslin is definitely a great young actress. And is this Sofia Vassilieva the same one as Eloise?

Dianora: So you were trying to say that the decision is fine but the reason is stupid? Sorry, it still doesn't read that way.

I can't get much plainer than bolding the word REASON in my original quote.
Not wanting to shave your head seems like an awfully stupid reason to turn down a role in a movie based on a best-selling book.
If I thought the decision to not do the movie, period, was stupid, I'd have said so. Everyone has reasons for the decisions they make, some which make sense, others which seem awfully frivolous ("I don't want to shave my pretty little head").

Considering that a great many best-selling books turn into extremely lousy movies--and at her rather young age, she isn't yet, that much of a method actress. (We aren't talking DeNiro here). I'm in her corner. I wouldn't shave my head either. Also, since the word "apparently" is used in the story--I don't know if I would think that the reason is gospel. Maybe there is another reason.

Dianora: Oh. Now I totally understand. It seems you think it was a good decision for her to not do the movie. You just think the REASON for not doing the movie was stupid. Of course, the decision, as reported, is based solely on that REASON... but I digress when I should be focusing on the REASON and not the end result of that REASONing.
So, OK. Yeah.

I agree with you, monkey65. Sofia Vassilieva has the most gorgeous hair. It'd be a shame if she cut it. If she does, though, I hope she donates it to some organization that makes wigs for cancer patients.
