Last-minute Cast Cuts Leave Las Vegas in Lurch
Las Vegas creator Gary Scott Thompson says the decision to bid adieu to both James Caan and Nikki Cox came so last-minute that Friday's season-ender which boasts an explosion and a shooting, to name but two big events, and was purposely designed to coerce NBC into greenlighting a fifth season not only might not pave the way for Ed's and Mary's exits, but actually has the writers in a bit of a pickle. "The season finale had already been written," Thompson tells TVGuide.com, "so it's going to be challenging to get us out of the situation I put us in."
For Thompson's latest take on why Caan is leaving Las Vegas, see the fresh Ask Ausiello.

Granted the writers have been ignoring Mary for years so it is no surprize Niki Cox decided to leave.
How ever I just can't imagine Las Vegas with out Ed. He is the reason to watch. He is the center holding the show together.
Why can't they bring back Ed and Mary for the season premiere and give them a proper send off?

I LOVE this show because it is pure entertainment for me with a dramatic twist here and there. It gets you caught up in their lives, but it is fun and exciting too. I sure hope something can be worked out for another season cause I'll sure be watching.

Nikki Cox is beautiful and funny, why can't they find a good vehicle for her?

Can't they just come back next season and make up a reason why Caan and Cox are no longer around? Why is that so hard? I don't think it would be an "insult" to the show's "fans" or anything...

Does anyone know what's up with Cox? I had not watched the show in awhile until this last week. The first time they showed her I did a double take because she looked so different. It is obvious she has had some work done - her lips now have "The Swan" look and she looked way too thin. I thought she looked sick actually. Hopefully she isn't but I hate to see people that are pretty start messing with stuff till they no longer look real.

The truly dumb thing about this is that they sandbagged Nikki by saying that they were not bringing her back due to budget cuts. And then the next day Jimmy Caan announced that he wasn't going to come back to persue movie roles (like they've just been kicking his door down.) So, now that he's leaving, don't they now have enough money to bring Nikki/Mary back? I love the mindless entertainment of the show, and I'm surprised that it didn't get a blog on here in place of one of the many cancelled shows, but everything about this sounds dumb dee dumb-dumb dumb. ~ŠL

Here they go Again!! A few seasons ago, I promised myself, I would not watch NBC any longer, just for this reason...Then 'Las Vegas' came along, and it was Different, in a Very Good way...As many have said, 'Las Vegas' is 'The Love Boat' of the 21st Century. It is almost always well written, well casted with great guests, and a Great Escape, long with a Messsage. The departure of Ed De Line, and Mrs. De Line, will be a Huge Void, which can Not be filled...Not by Danny, Mike, or any of the Great Support Team, that is going to be Soon 'Out of Work', with out 'Big Ed'...My only comment on Mary, is that her character, has Not been given the 'Time or Credit' that she deserves. Hopefully, this will Not be the last of Ed De Line, even if he is only in random episodes...

I have to say that I agree. Las Vegas will not be the same without Big Ed Deline. As far as Nikki Cox goes...I wish they could find some way to keep her on the show and I hope that they at least find a good way to send her character off. Why not have her and James Caan be special guest stars occasionally? I also have to agree that I want Vanessa Marcil to stay on the show. She is beautiful and I like the way she plays the character Sam and hello...SAM"S THE NEW OWNER OF THE MONTECITO!!! If they kill her off in the finale who will that job fall to? I say that because if I remember correctly someone will be cashing their chips in permanently. I also have to say that despite the cast changes and budget cuts I am glad that this got renewed for a fifth season.

i believe that nikki cox did not have a say in the decision. i think the producers told her that they were letting her go. i don't believe she would have left based on what her statement was when the news was released. she said she was "sad and shocked". so that means she didn't choose to leave. it sucks but her character has not had a good storyline in a while. i think they are making her go crazy especially after last weeks episode

Comment for NBC...Now that you have decided to bring 'Las Vegas' back for One More Season, why not do it right...Don't mess with Success...and remember the Secret to 'Las Vegas' success, and that is 'What Happens in Vegas-Stays in Vegas'...That should include Mary and Ed & Jillian De Line...Step up to the plate, and make Mr Caan an Offer He Can't Refuse...and put them back in 'There' original time slot.

After watching that episode, I think 'challenging' is a bit of an understatement. There's no way they can wrap up all those storylines with any continuity without those two main characters' involvement.

You have to be kidding me! They fired Nikki Cox? It is not surprising, because they have not written anything for her for so long. Oh NO! Does this mean Delinda Dum Dum gets more air time? I can't bare it..Delinda...Delinda...Delinda... With this news, the season finale makes no sense? I was hoping it would be Molly Sims written off in the blast.
