Michael J. Fox Accused of "Acting" in Anti-Bush Ad

Michael J. Fox has come under fire for his appearance in election-season TV spots that deride certain GOP candidates for fighting stem-cell research that could potentially cure Parkinson's disease, from which the actor suffers. Conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh, for one, has accused Fox of either being "off his medication or acting" — playing up his writhing and voice-quaking — in the spots, while others have labeled Fox's claims as "mistruths." Limbaugh has since apologized, yet insists Fox has allowed Democrats to "exploit" his illness. This may very well be the first Fox news that Rush hasn't deemed fair and balanced.

I think it's sad that MJF will support a candidate solely on his/her stance on stem cell research. Talk about personalizing your political opinions and shoving your agenda down our throats. He should be ashamed.

I'm not surprised by MJ's doing this at all. He admitted in his book that he went off his meds to appear before Congress so they would be more sympathetic to the affects of this horrible disease. A woman in my family had this and she lived with us the last years of her life. I've seen this first hand.

There is no proof that stem cell research will provide any cure. The MJF Foundation has provided 1.9 billion dollars for a different research that looks to be even better involving a gene therapy with some sort of virus. If his foundation is doing this, shouldn't he know about it so he can quit misrepresenting stem cell research and the candidates involved?

You enter the arena, you better be prepared to do battle. The arena of ideas and politics is a tricky one to step into.

If anyone should be ashamed here, it is the lying drug addict Limbaugh. This is a man who has lied about his own medical condition just to abuse drugs, and he wants to deny medical treatment to people who truly need it.

Limbaugh is just and old big wind bag looking to get his name out there. He's say or do anything to get attention and it worked again.

Limbaugh already has a major audience bigger than that of most TV shows. This doesn't gain him any attention at all. It does shed a spotlight on the lies being perpetrated about stem cell research and embryonic stem cell research. Did you know that the Amendment 2 (Missouri) that has a fancy name about stem cell research actually has nothing to do with it? It's a cloning amendment. Stem cell research is already legal in Mizzou and neither candidate plans on changing that. It's amazing the accusations without facts in this matter. I love the "jump to conclusions" crowd. :)

Republicans have Limbaugh, Democrates have Howard Dean. They're both nuts and prone to proving it with their actions. Just point and laugh when they do.

bsites: Limbaugh has a "bigger audience than most TV shows"? That 10 million figure is based on WEEKLY listenership, not daily. Try about 2 million/day,and you've got it.

And,BTW,Limbaugh just said on his show that he will apologize if he's wrong. That's not an apology, not even the lame ones where the person who did wrong apologizes if people were offended by what he/she did or said.

People like Limbaugh, with his money and
celebrity, have access to the best doctors and most cutting edge medical treatments. So you can bet if he ever gets a disease that has a treatment derived from stem cell research, he will be able to get that treatment, even if he has to leave the U.S. to receive it. But his followers really think he speaks for the "common man."

BTW, I can just imagine the writhing he does when he's off his "medication".

Rush Limbaugh should be ashamed of himself for wagging his hypocritical finger at Micheal J Fox. If Fox did deliberately stay off his meds, I have nothing but respect for him. Many people don't even know what Parkinson's is, and if he didn't take his medications, this inaction will allow more people to see what it is that he has, and why he's fighting for a cure. Without a 'visual', many people would just shrug it off. What's the phrase, about a squeaky wheel getting oiled? If this accomplishes further reasonable stem cell research -which has many potential applications- more power to Michael. I really hope a cure is found in his lifetime - and not before it's too late for him to enjoy it.

When we had a ballot proposition in my state about stem cell research, I thought of my cousin's battle with MS and voted for it. The anti-stem-cell-research crowd is making it about abortion. These are cells that were never going to be babies. But there is the potential for scientists to make them act as specific cells (thus the need for embbryonic cells that can easily modified) and cloning is used to replicate these cells.

and even if MJF's Foundation is supporting one method to find a cure, it doesn't mean the group is against other possibilities.

People don't seem to realize that in many cases of CP that it is actually the MEDS making the person shake so much. Without them, the person is often not able to move much at all. And stem-cell research is helping. No, there may not be a proven cure from it yet, but there are many advances, and no, they do not need to get cells by 'killing babies." Plus, there is no proven cure from a lot of less conterversial research either, so let's not play the blame game.
