Marvel-ous News for My Sons (And Maybe Yours, Too)

OK, so my twin 5-year-olds these days are mad for Super Hero Squad action figures — these 2- 3-inch tall, shiny-happy versions of Wolverine, Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther and, as more and more roll out/beckon Dad's wallet, seemingly every good or bad guy to ever inhabit the Marvel universe. Well, Marvel Entertainment is now developing a 26-episode animated series situating the same extra-cartoony characters in "Super Hero City" and throwing them into "humorous adventures" with Doctor Doom, Magneto, Loki and others.

According to the Reporter, the half-hour Marvel Super Hero Squad series is targeted for a 2009 premiere on a network TBD. — MWM

I feel your pain, Matt. This started in my house with the similarly built Star Wars Galactic Heroes. Then they started making Spider Man, and it's all down hill from there. I swear we have at least 70 of the little critters. Granted 10 of them are variations on Luke Skywalker.

Yeah, luckily my boys are indifferent to Star Wars (thus far), and have no interest in those mini-Heroes figures. And yes, we similarly have about six variations on Spider-Man, several Iron Men and at least two Wolverines. And they just released another wave of characters!!

I have to admit, those Galactic Heroes (or, as I call 'em, the super-deformed figures) are kinda cute. Heck, I have the Galactic Heroes version of the Millenium Falcon somewhere - I justify owning by saying that it's for when I eventually have kids.:-p

There's Galactic Heroes versions of Marvel characters (Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, etc.), Star Wars, and Transformers (which don't transform - so what's the point?)... what next, G.I. Joe? On second thought, maybe I shouldn't say that.

What cracks me (and Rich Sands here) up is how they all have some sort of SMILE. As in, "We're not an entirely evil supervillain! It's all in good fun, 5-year-old boy!"

I mean, a smiling Ghost Rider...?? - MWM

Yeah, when you see Apocalypse and Dr. Doom with somewhat cheery smiles, that's just plain wrong!:-p

EDIT - Better hide that wallet, Matt - there's Galactic Heroes versions of the Indiana Jones figures! One two-pack even has Belloq and the spirit of the Ark... and yes, they both have smirks/smiles on their faces!

It was Wolverine who turned me off of the X-Men forever. The character was well-drawn, so to speak, but I just could not get behind a "hero" who slashes his enemies with adamantium blades built into his exo-skeleton. It seems particularly savage and the idea disgusted me.
