Could Lost's "Oceanic Six" Add Up to More?

Lost fans finally got their Season 4 premiere on Thursday night, and within the very first moments (Spoiler alert) they learned about the Oceanic Six, a group to which at least Future Jack, Kate and (now we see) Hurley belong. As you wrack your brain over who the only other three "survivors" will be, keep in mind this previously excised portion of my Q&A with Naveen Andrews. "There's something quite intriguing [about the Oceanic Six] in that maybe there are only officially six," Sayid's portrayer shared. "Maybe there are more who they couldn't reveal to the outside world but are either still on the island or somewhere else, and why."

That, of course, would dovetail nicely with Future Jack's anxiousness to go baaaack to the island. Perhaps he's had a change of heart about some folks who didn't choose Team Shephard and thus ultimately will get left behind?

Well, I think Naveen Andrews was being very truthful and not really giving anything away. The Oceanic 6 refers to a media frenzy surround six passengers supposedly rescued from OA815. But we can obviously infer that someone else made it off the Island, someone at the end of season 2, perhaps?

There's also the chance that Kate isn't part of the Oceanic Six. What if she got off the island without the media knowing? Maybe only Jack knows she's off the island? We didn't see her interact with the general public in the season finale.

If Juliet survived, maybe she would be an unofficial member of the "Oceanic 6" being that she wasn't on the flight?

Couple of things: It's becoming obvious that there was an agreement, probably a condition of being let off the island, that the "O6" lie about there being other survivors. That's where Jack's guilt comes from, why Hurley lied about Ana Lucia.

Second, the person in the casket at the end of last year...if that was one of the six, which one? Was it someone else? Whoever it was, Kate doesn't like them.

It can't be as simple as people who did or didn't choose to go with Jack -- after all, Hurley chose to go with Locke, but he got off the island. Also, I think Kate is a member of the Oceanic 6, because in the S3 finale, Jack said something about the Golden Pass that Oceanic Airlines "gave us," including her.

I think that several people will die in whatever fracas is to come, but that several more have remained on the island. I think that the potential for something great on the island was destroyed (not by our crash survivors, but by either the Others or these boat people), and that the people remaining there are essentially trapped. Ultimately Jack, Kate, Hurley and the other three will have to return in order to save those people AND set something right.

ITA that people like Juliet and Ben wouldn't count as the Oceanic 6 -- they weren't on the plane, and the mysterious company they work for could secret them away.

My bets for the other 3 are Aaron, Claire and either Sawyer or Sayid.

Claire I think gets off and is one of the 6. He could be referring to Aaron as one of the unofficial ones since he was born on the island.

Where did I gt the notion that the person in the casket was Jack's father? Am I getting confused in the flash-fowards?

I would think Sun is one of the 6 because she doesn't want to die midway through her pregnancy. Jin should then be another.

I think it's Michael in the casket.

I think the other three are Sun and Jin (two for one special there) and Sayid. I think Aaron also leaves and is separated from Claire which will be a pivotal heart wrenching moment. Aaron wouldn't be counted in the Oceanic 6 since he wasn't a ticketed passenger of OA815.

And Michael and Walt are not members of the Oceanic 6 either since they got off the Island a month earlier. I think they are using aliases and being hidden from anything to do with Oceanic Airlines.

One of the more memorable lines from last night was "Are they still alive?" which beckons the question, Does Hurley know one way or another at this point? I think he somehow does. I presume last night's show to take place about 6 months after the rescue, so summer 2005. The Oceanic 6 are starting to become less of a celebrity group; Jack hasn't fallen off the deep end yet. In fact, Jack is still happy with his decision to leave. It appears that Hurley cracks first and is the one that puts the bug in Jack's here about obsessing about trying to get back to the Island and rescue everyone else. And really, I think that's inevitable in 2010.

For the second time on the show, time has been fractured. The first was the crash. The second was/will be the rescue. Over the past three seasons we've been piecing the story together from before the crash through flashbacks. Now we need to piece the story together from after the rescue through flash forwards. I believe firmly that the show will revert in some sense to a flashback method of storytelling. The catch is the flashbacks will be to the Island and we will accept present time as the future. Of course, the "future" will actually coincide with the timeline of us as viewers. Like last year's season finale took place in April 2007, the show will progress its timeline towards the logical May 2010 finale.

Well, if it was Michael in the casket, what would have become of Walt? The funeral director said no one at all had come to the funeral and I'm sure Walt would have at least shown up (unless he was physically unable to do so). I don't remember what size the casket was, but now I'm thinking that Hurley could be in there. Jack was telling Hurley last night that he was thinking of growing a beard, something he already HAD in the other flash forward. So perhaps, someone or some THING finally caught up to Hurley at the mental institution. How scary was that so-called "Oceanic attorney"? He gave me the same kind of creeps as The Gentlemen did all those years ago on Buffy!

With the strike are we still on schedule for the May '10 finale?

I agree with lmzadi - I think one way or another they would have all tried to get Sun off the island so she could have her baby. So like the raft period, Sun and Jin are separated again. I think the other three are Sun, Claire (remember Desmond's premonition - it has to be Claire) and Aaron.

I think Ben is in the casket.

A few random comments:

Evangeline Lilly is MUCH prettier WITHOUT makeup.

Why didn't Charlie (who already proved his incredible lung capacity) swim out the hole that was created when Patchy pulled the grenade pin? He couldn't WHILE the hatch was filling, but afterward? MAYBE he DID. MAYBE he IS alive. Maybe he swam to the surface and floated on a piece of hatch and was found! Regardless, having his character THERE was SO great.

I think Ben was in the casket. If it had been one of the "Oceanic 6," it would have been more than one paragraph in the paper, plus that works for Kate's reaction.

I think a lot more people were "rescued" that just six, but some of them are hidden away (by Oceanic? by Widmore? by DHARMA?) and the "six" have to keep quiet about it.

I really prefer the idyllic setting of the island, and seeing last season's finale flash forward, I am concerned that little will be ON the island.

PJ,

I don't think you have to be concerned with the ISLAND not being the central focus or setting of the show. Jack and Hurley (at different times) seem pretty anxious to get back there wouldn't you say? And when they do leave the island (in present island time) - I'm guessing some will still be left behind. The ISLAND will ALWAYS be a focus on LOST until 2010. There are way too many mysteries there to uncover to desert that theme.

Anyway...just my 2 cents.
