Kiefer Sutherland Wastes No Time, Reports to Jail
Kiefer Sutherland by Lester Cohen/WireImage.com
Kiefer Sutherland on Wednesday was formally sentenced to 48 days in jail for his second drunken-driving arrest in three years, and immediately reported to Glendale city jail. Though the 24 star could have waited until Feb. 12 to start his stint (which needs to be completed by March 30), "Kiefer made the decision to surrender to custody immediately," his attorney tells the Associated Press.
The Glendale jail is a minimum-security facility with 48 cells, each measuring 10 feet by 8 feet and equipped with a toilet, sink, water fountain and two beds, though Sutherland won't be sharing his cell with anyone.
Sutherland pleaded no contest in October to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of .08.

I think it's really admirable how he's handled the whole situation. Sure, he probably needs to go to treatment (I mean, come on--4 DUI's in just a handful of years?). But he owned up to his part right away and put his family, friends, career at 24 and everyone else first and is spending this holiday season in jail. You really can't say anything bad about the guy now.

Just a question: How can you wait until February 12 to start a 48-day jail term and have it be complete by March 3? I'm not a mathematical genius, but... ">

He was handled this inteligently. It was a mistake, but I can`t stop admire him because he takes this seriously, without whining or stupid attitude. Paris Hilton, L. Lohan and N. Richie can learn some lessons about integrity. People made mistakes, but no much people can handle their mistakes. My love for Kiefer. God Bless your heart, and good luck.

It's great that Kiefer is taking care of this now while the strike is going on. I'd rather see him take care of this now and not procrastinate and affect production on 24 later in the year. Hopefully the writers of 24 can crank out lots of scripts when and if the strike ends, so Kiefer can get back to the trenches once he gets released.

We call that a "typo"; should be March 30. - MWM

In a world where people increasingly don't take responsibility for their actions, Kiefer is a great example to all of us. He didn't use his celebrity to get off easily, and took his punishment like Jack Bauer would have.
Don't pick up the soap!

What a coincidence that if he reports now he won't interfere with next season's filming..

If you haven't already, check out his mugshot. That is the hottest booking photo I have ever seen.
I am impressed with how gracefully Kiefer has handled this. The Hollywood "starlets" could really learn something from him. He is a class-act and I wish him the best of luck.

Bravo to Kiefer. How he handled his arrest and took responsibility for his actions should be lesson to all the young actors. Vasant56, he would have gone to jail during the holiday break even if 24was being filmed. I believe he had worked out it to serve his time without disrupting his work.

Cmas ?! I can understand doing it sooner than later especially given the Writers' strike. However, why go into jail BEFORE Christmas and apparently THROUGH Cmas AND the New Year ?!! "> That's missing out on some serious friends-and-family time. Doesn't add up. Unless, unless, he's only got to serve 1/3 the time which is 16 days and has him released before Cmas. Hmm.

Why does Kiefer, a talented actor, get 48 days in jail, while untalented Paris Hilton was treated like a star that she isn't.

I'm really scratching my head over all Kiefer Sutherland's so-called "fans" heaping praise on the man. Four DUIs over any length of time is not something to be proud of, regardless of whether or not he accepted the punishment and reported to the city jail months before he needed to. He has an obvious addiction to alcohol and he needs to start by helping himself. He can also help others by either choosing to stay sober -- or by staying off the road after his release. Why is it that not one media outlet has mentioned the suspension of his drivers license? Mr. Sutherland may be an Emmy-winning actor with a hit TV show, but I wouldn't want him behind the wheel in my neck of the woods.
