Has Katie Holmes Said "No Thank You" to Oscar?

Sources close to Tom Cruise's bride-to-be tell the New York Post's Page Six that with the Oscar nomination-hunting season now underway, Fox Searchlight Pictures offered to put Katie Holmes' name out there for consideration, for her role in Thank You for Smoking. Holmes' "handlers," however, are said to have "respectfully declined" the offer, perhaps due to the raunchy nature of her sex scene with Aaron Eckhart. You know, her career did have some potential there for a bit.

Wow. How pathetic. I'm disappointed that she's allowed herself to be so manipulated. I read an interview with her once, I think in Vogue. She seemed like such a normal person from a nice, normal, middle class family. Clearly, she's delusional at this point in her life.

I'm not sure what surprises more -- that Holmes would decline a chance at an Oscar nomination or that Fox Searchlight seriously thinks she could be nominated for that role.

Don't get me wrong -- it's a great movie. I just don't think of her part as an Oscar-worthy one.

But to be fair, every studio puts forth almost every name associated with a film, operating on the "throw as much against the wall/see what sticks" philosophy. I mean, I can promise you that Paramount is offering Nacho Libre's Jack Black "for your consideration," just because. Lindsay Lohan will get pushed for that Prairie Home thing (as well as Bobby). That's just what studios and PR people do.

I honestly don't believe this story (i mean, the "no, thanks" part)...

But also i saw "Thank you for smoking" and i really don't think she did a such a good job to even think about an Oscar nomination. The only remarkable performance in that movie was from Aaron, even Maria Bello did just an ok job (and she's usually excellent in her movies).... and just to be clear, i really like that movie.

That's true.

Back in the '80s, I went through a phase where I was buying Variety from time to time, and I recall there were some pretty, shall we say, unrealistic Oscar campaign ads.

Same for the Emmys. I think I actually remember a "for your consideration" ad for the cast of The Love Boat.

That was my initial thought. Then I read Matt's post and at least that makes more sense. I'm just glad someone had the right mind and said no. Potential career or not, Katie Holmes was not the gretest actress BC( before Cruise) or after.

She's probably not allowed to get an Oscar before Tom has one. In fact, I bet its in her contract (with Tom, not the studio). He can't have another wife overshadowing him.

Well let's not forget that Nicole Kidman didn't win her Oscar till after she divorced Tom.

Right, Nicole wasn't allowed to win one either until after she was out of his control.

I believe you are correct, tiva1000. Even if her performance isn't Oscar-worthy, she'd better not risk it.

Anyway, she's young. She'll have plenty of time to earn that statue...in that next chapter of her life, when she's allowed to wear heels again!

Tiva1000, wulfman75, and TV Gord, I think you're onto something! She'll win someday, probably in the Best Performance in a "Really, Mom, Everything's Okay" Relationship category.

I think she'll win someday only because pretending to be so happy with a wacko like Tom will really hone her acting chops.
