Kathy Griffin's "Vulgar" Emmy Speech Gets D-leted

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has said "no thanks" to Kathy Griffin's Jesus-mocking Emmy thank-you speech — My Life on the D-List won best reality program at Saturday's Creative Arts ceremony — and will excise it when the event is aired this weekend on E! In a spiel deemed "offensive" by ATAS and smote by the Catholic League for being "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech," Griffin said that while "a lot of people... thank Jesus for this award... I want you to know that no one had less to do with this [win] than Jesus." She then went on to "diss" Him and proclaim, "This award is my god now."

Honestly, people just can't take a joke where Jesus is concerned. It's ridiculous really. Award show after award show, people praise Jesus, and quite frankly, I'm offended by the lack of sincerity the vast majority of those people display. But apparently, it's better to simply give the shout-out than to be sincere about it. I think it's that hypocrisy that makes what Kathy said so freaking funny!

Can't say that I'm surprised by the Academy's call though. Censorship, rather than free speech, has become the American way...

Many of the same people decrying Kathy Griffin's comments are the same people who criticized Muslims for being angered over less-than-flattering political cartoons of Muhammed.

I can understand why a Catholic anti-defamation league might want to defend remarks that are specifically anti-Catholic, but jokes about religion...

For a group who so regularly and matter-of-factly condemns others, they certainly have a thin skin.

I find it amusing when people thank God in their acceptance speeches for the Oscar they won playing a murderer or for the grammy they got for singing about a crack hoe, and at first I thought that's where KG was going with it. But she took it too far. At a time where you have to walk on eggshells when it comes to other religions - and even atheists for crying out loud - Jesus is still an open target. Don't expect respect from me for your beliefs if you can't bloody well show respect for mine.

I always think that God laughs at these jokes as much as some of us. But, He/She is probably laughing more at how silly some of us can get when it comes to religious humor.

I LOVE KATHY G!!!!

I just consider the source and give it the attention it deserves. NOTHING!

Many of the same people decrying Kathy Griffin's comments are the same people who criticized Muslims for being angered over less-than-flattering political cartoons of Muhammed.

There is a teeny difference between the two; I haven't heard any reports of riots in the streets or anyone dying as a result of Griffin's remarks.

Some of what she said was funny, and I agree that thanking God (or Jesus) for an award has always bugged me. I would think that He would have better things to do than to make sure that someone wins some silly trophy. Kathy being Kathy, she carried it too far into offensive. I know that's why some people like her, but it's why I don't.

I love Kathy and I'm so glad that she got her due. Can't wait for the next season of "D-List," but too bad that her dad passed before she was finally recognized. Can't wait to see what Maggie has to say about it though.

Well, the moral police are at it again - funny how irony is so lost on them. If it isn't funny, then she should be allowed to crash and burn in the court of public opinion. It is so interesting to me, how the 'J' word is thrown about at every award show but this time it isn't ok - 'cause it doesn't fit the appropriate concept of how it should be used. I think it is time for us to accept that this country no longer has free speech. Nipplegate made sure of that.

OMG, would people please get a sense of humor! I agree that many of the Christians I know are awfully thin skinned when it comes to anyone who doesn't go along with their belief system.

Kathy Griffin is trash. Always has been and always will be. Personally I could care less what anyone thinks. Yes I am a Christian. I belive in free speech. I just really wish they would censor more tv programs! AND I also believe that prayer along with God should be put BACK into school!

This is MY opinion.

THin skinned? Okay - your mother's a crack whore. Yeah, that's hilarious.

I wasn't even that offended by it - until I read afterwards that she said "I hoped I offended alot of people." She wasn't trying to be funny - she was trying to be hurtful. I don't know what chip on her shoulder she has about Christians, but if she was aiming to alienate, she succeeded.
