« Today's News: Our Take
Johnny Depp in Dark Shadows and Other Casting News
Johnny Depp by Steve Granitz/WireImage.com
And here I thought I was the only one left who was obsessed with Dark Shadows. But no, apparently Johnny Depp is, too. According to Variety, the erstwhile Cap'n Jack grew up wishing he was the '60s soap's anti-hero, vampire Barnabas Collins — and still does. So now that he's a big movie star and not a starry-eyed kid, he's making it happen, developing a big-screen version of the daytime drama. Oh, please, please, please, can we get Angelina Jolie to play Angelique the Witch?! Those lips, those eyes! She's perfect! Elsewhere... Susan Sarandon has been cast as the slain heroine's grandmother in The Lovely Bones, based on Alice Sebold's best-seller. Stanley Tucci is considering playing her killer. Dude, Susan Sarandon's in the movie.... What's to think about? Meanwhile, Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon are teaming up to coproduce and star in New Line's Four Christmases, about a couple who visit their four divorced parents all on the same holiday. In small-screen casting news, Gilmore Girls paterfamilias Edward Herrmann has signed on to play a doc on several eppies of Grey's Anatomy. And Melrose Place alum Rob Estes has been added to the cast of ABC's fall drama, Women's Murder Club. Presumably not as one of the women.

A schoolgirl crush (Barnabas Collins) and my middle age crush (Johnny Depp) will be one and the same. Perfect casting and I just can't wait!
Also, Edward Herrmann back on TV and on a show I actually watch. I've missed him. Wonderful news, even if it is only for a few episodes.
Thanks for making Friday even better! (By the way, I like how you're signing your name so we don't confuse you and Matt. Thanks!)

Matt - did you have the Barnabas Collins board game growing up - like me?
And you are absolutely right - Angelina Jolie would be perfect as Angelique. But what are the chances of this making it? The revamped tv series in the 90's was canned after, what 6 epis? Or do you think Depp would give it street cred?

I always loved the freaky music on Dark Shadows. I was a little kid when it was on but I always remember that music. I do think people would be interested because of Johnny Depp.

I loved Dark Shadows and had a total crush on Barnabus Collins. Looking back I don't really know why but I sure did. Sadly I don't think anyone can play it better than the original guy. Ben Cross sure couldn't. But if anyone can make an attempt it would be JD. Maybe Wynona can play the girl he really loved. What was her name?

Ooo! Dark Shadows has to be the most eerie television show of all time. And in turn, makes watching it so scary... the lighting, the production, the acting... all added to that eerie effect. I always get chills just looking an episode of DS hehe
I can't wait to see a big screen version of it!

Lovely Bones does sound awesome - wow. It's already a great book.
I was so obsessed with Dark Shadows when I was a kid. I'd run home from school and only catch the last twenty minutes each day, since it was a half an hour show. I think Angelina Jolie would be perfect too. My biggest memory, however, of any episode, is the one where Jonathan Frid (was that Barabus's real name?) accidently walked on set in his street clothes, going home for the day. It was live-on-tape back then (one take) and stuff like that still happened. I still can't believe it didn't get edited out. The score was great, with selections on billboard's top 20. It's one of the only soaps from back then where all the episodes still exist on tape.
I wish they still ran soaps like this - with one storyline. Oh wait - they do - telenovelas do it.

Angelina Jolie would be brilliant as Angelique - great idea Matt! I have another great idea - Anne Hathaway as Victoria Winters. She'd be perfect.

I say Nicole Kidman would be great as Angelique, she has the "unforgettable eyes" for it and for Josette/Maggie/Victoria Winters it should be an actress with a "sweet" expression on her face like Franka Potente.
I also say that Josette should be portrayed as an extremely intelligent lady and not a mindless, "sitting duck" as the writers from the 60's series made her out to be at times. I love her, but I feel the writers never did her justice.

I used to watch Dark Shadows all the time, and when they did the remake. I can't believe Johnny Depp loves it too, that is so cool. It would be great if he would do a movie of Dark Shadows!
I have been watching Look-A-Like on the TV Guide channel and I saw that the one of the Johnny Depp look-a-like shows was supposed to be on this week. Well I DVR'd it, and what was on was all about stupid Britney Spears. What gives? I lost out on watching it the last time because my Satellite went out while I was watching it. Now I get this. Who can I write to about it?
I love Johnny Depp and I love his Pirate movies. I was hoping I could see this episode. Darn it anyway!
