Fonda Lets Slip the C-word on Today
Viewers of a benign segment on Thursday morning's Today show about playwright Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues were treated to a not-so-lovely naughty word blurted out by the ever-controversial actress Jane Fonda. She was actually just saying the title of a monologue that she was asked to perform (it's a four-letter word that begins with C and ends in T), but nonetheless, the stunned look on host Meredith Vieira's face said that her earpiece was probably on fire with a gaggle of screaming producers. Tell the kids "Earmuffs!" and check out the video here:
After a commercial break, Vieira apologized to Today viewers for the inappropriate language that may have offended them. Happy V Day! — Erin Fox

I missed seeing this. Although I ALWAYS watch The Today Show, without fail, this morning was the exception. The Indy Jones IV trailer that GMA showed *rocked*!!
Nonetheless, watching this video now, it just doesn't feel like it was that big of a deal. *shrug*

Wow - you don't hear that word very often when watching day time TV. I'm sure that the FCC nazi's will be all over this - fines will be coming!

I love the C-word; I don't find it offensive at all. It's just a descriptive for a body part. Without the C-word there would be no F-wording, and I can't imagine a duller world. Hooray for that B-word Jane!

Well it's not surprising that she uses it frequently! It is a nasty sounding word, and I guess it wouldn't be offensive to men at all. I personally DON'T feel that it is a female body part, it's a disgusting word that I myself have never used and I am not a prude. It's right there with the N-Word. Offensive and degrating!

right on Buffy. I'm no prude either, but this word is offensive to lots of us I'd bet.

This video and associated published text is a case of stirring up and sensationalizing a simple quote. I didn't hear it as a Fonda-favored word. Another case of a muckraker causing a tempest in a teapot.

Did I miss something here? Have all of our pressing problems such as the flagging economy, the mortgage meltdown and our dependence on foreign oil been solved?
I only ask because I can't believe we're still wasting time on stupid crap like this, the butt shot from an ancient episode of NYPD Blue, etc.

What? IT's a simple news item about a celebrity that used an offensive swear word on national TV. How is this sensationalizing?

I just watched the clip and am so amazed how casually and without any shock to the other guest it came out. Meridith seemed to be OK with it at the time although she made some kind of grimace. When the word is used by a man arguing with his wife or girlfriend it is very much used to offend and anger the other person. It is not just another word to describe a body part. That is being very naive and dumb not to know the difference. Jane Fonda IMO did not use the word to start trouble like she surely did during the Vietnam War. I guess the Today show has no time delay to make an edit or bleep the word out. We'll just have to see how the government bigshots handle it.

Whoa, you might want to read the full AP story on this before you bad mouth someone like Jane Fonda.
The whole reason she was talking about the monologue is because she refused to perform the monologue.
From the AP report:
"Fonda said she was asked to perform a monologue with the offensive word as the title. She said her reply was, 'I don't think so. I've got enough problems.'"

Oooooh, a four-letter word! How awful. I think that kids are all going to be scarred for life. Maybe instead of letting them hang around while I'm watching the "Today" show, from now on I should send them into another room so they can play some ultra-violent video games.
