Jack Bauer's New Partner Is... The Ricker?

This just in from Fox: NYPD Blue vet Rick Schroder has joined the Season 6 cast of 24, playing Mike Doyle, a "forceful CTU operative... who teams with Jack Bauer to execute crucial field operations." Thankfully, that description does not go on to say, "... while secretly bedding Bauer's daughter, Kim." People lose appendages that way, literally.

This another one of my predictions/possible spoilers, so spoilerphobes avert your gaze!

This is your last chance...

*********** POSSIBLE SPOILER ***********
I've always felt that there would come a time when Keifer Sutherland would decide to leave the show, but that the producers would keep this information secret until a super-shocking episode where Jack Bauer is killed. Rick Schroder sure sounds like a plausible substitute. I may be wrong but I think they are setting up the next star of the series.

I, too, have had that belief for a few seasons now, Chap — minus, of course, the specific casting of Schroder.

Is "Mike Doyle" strong enough a character name to shoulder his own bad days?

Well, it's no "Troy McClure"...

But, seriously, yeah...I think that's definitely a new leading character name. It has that strong, manly, mannish-man sound

Plus, Schroder has had practice for this role -- I'm sure he endured many "bad days" on the set of Silver Spoons.

Interesting theory, but if this is true, it's not going to happen this season due to there's a 24 movie coming out. Kiefer Sutherland is the movie, so I highly doubt he'll die this season.

Isn't Elisha Cuthbert younger that Rick Schroder by at least 10 years? Talk about jail bait!

Whatever the long-range plans of his character, this is great news. Rick Schroder was superb on NYPD Blue and he will make a kick-ass agent working with Jack Bauer.

Ricker came to Blue in season 6 as well. Should Mark Paul Gosselear prep to join Kiefer in season 9?

Well, if they hadn't killed off Tony (grrr!), he and Jack would have made a great team!

I'm just sayin....

they should have named the character Matt Doyle - it rolls off the tongue easier.

Ok, all of you 24 fans, is it too late to join the show? I don't want to watch the first 5 seasons on DVD, I just want to jump right in, is that possible with a show like 24? Damn those casting agents, I never had any intention of adding yet another show to my Tivo, but Rick Schroder has always pulled me in (I didn't watch NYPD Blue before he joined, then I was hooked!)

You can start at the beginning of this season. It will be self contained enough. Oh wait, you might want to watch Season 5 to get background on the Logans. Oh and there is a new President Palmer, so you might want to see the old one, that means you have to go back to season 2 (but that was the worst of the seasons - Kim and the mountain lions still make me laugh) and go forward from there. Never mind what I said, better watch all the seasons first. But it will be easy really. Once you start watching '24' it is impossible to stop.

Seriously, if you don't mind a few references you won't understand, you probably could begin this season and be fine. You'll just miss the progression of Chloe.:-D

Thanks Cinder, I think I'll just start with this season and see how it goes. If I get lost I'll look for you on the 24 blog and beg you to explain ;)

I think you'll be fine starting with Season 6, Rain388. I didn't watch Prison Break last season, but when they added William Fichtner (from the canceled Invasion) to the cast, I had to start watching it. So, I went to their web site and read what I could to catch up with the story line. I also saved an article from the TV Guide magazine that had a list of the cast and how they fit into the story.

The 24 web site has detailed episode recaps, so you could read those from at least the last few episodes to catch up. And there will be plenty of information in the magazine, so watch for that. You'll at least know why Jack was hijacked to China in the Season 5 finale.
