« Today's News: Our Take
Isaiah's PSA Debuts During Tonight's Grey's
As previously detailed in the TV Guide News Report, Isaiah Washington's mea-culpa public-service announcement on behalf of GLAAD and GLSEN is ready to roll. Produced in 20- and 30-second versions, the spot will get its first airing tonight during a two-hour block of Grey's Anatomy repeats. Per GLAAD, the script reads as follows:
"Words have power. The power to express love, happiness and joy. They also have the power to heal. When you use words that demean a person because of their sexual orientation, race or gender, you send a message of hate. A very powerful message. But we all have the power to demand better from one another and from ourselves. We have the power to heal and change the world by the words we use."

My cynical side is asking if Isaiah really believes what he will be mouthing.

I think that's a great message... and the cynical side of me wonders if people are so cynical of Isaiah cause they don't believe people can change for the better.

I just included this as part of another post over on the TV Guide News Report item, but I'll put it here, too:
One thing I find curious -- why couldn't this ad have been finished a week earlier and aired during the much-more-watched season finale of Grey's Anatomy?
I mean, it was filmed some time ago, and surely it doesn't take that long to edit a 30-second PSA. I think this ad could have been ready last week.
Obviously, GLAAD and GLSEN would want as many people as possible to see it, so, if there was a roadblock, I suspect it came from ABC and/or the Grey's producers.
I wonder if those groups tried to get the spot aired during last week's season finale, but were turned down because the network didn't want that to be what people were talking about the next day.
Just a thought.

I wonder why some people hate black people so much (can't think of any other plausible reason) they are willing to call the people at GLAAD and GLSEN liars just to trash Isaiah even more. Make no mistake, there's no doubt people are calling them liars. GLAAD and GLSEN basically said many times they believe Isaiah is sincere. I don't see any realistic scenario where those organizations would lie for his benefit as some people are implying.

And, to be blunt, a stupid thought at that. Do you seriously believe that wouldn't have been leaked to the press in this day and age? If you honestly even consider believing that then perhaps you want to buy my bridge in Brooklyn. That kind of bomb would certainly have leaked to the press by now.

Check your facts, wildbill. GLAAD hasn't commented "many times" (correct me if I'm wrong). When the PSA was taped, the head of GLAAD said IW "seemed sincere". That's hardly the glowing praise you claim they had for him. No matter how hysterical your hyperbole gets, that's the fact.
It's funny, when we attacked Mel Gibson or Michael Richards or Paris Hilton for their stupid behavior, no one accused us of hating whites. Why is it that when Isaiah Washington is as stupid as they are, and we criticize him, it HAS to be because we hate blacks!? How thick do people have to be NOT to get that!?
If Isaiah Washington wanted to stop all the negative talk about him, he should have spoken publicly about it, not just sent out a press release. The last words on the subject we've heard from him (other than that non-apology on Oprah) was when he uttered the homophobic slur at the Golden Globes once again! By now, he should have said something SOMEPLACE to replace that, but he hasn't. He has no one to blame but himself for those of us who are suspicious about how sincere he really is.
Personally, I believe ABC waited until this week to show the PSA because they knew all the fans would be tuning in last week anyway. This way, if anyone cares to see the PSA at this point, they'll have to sit through up to two hours of reruns (or at least FF through them). It's all about ratings.

WHO CARES??? I think the entire thing is such nonsense. He didn't hit anyone- or shoot anyone- he called somebody a name. Good Grief- get over it...

In theory, sure, that would've made a lot of sense, but do you have any idea how much :30 of ad time on a first run Grey's is, let alone the season finale?
I'd guess it's probably close to GLAAD's marketing budget…for the entire year.

Wildbill,
The PSA isn't a spoiler. Who cares about a leak to the press? Duh.
And it's not appropriate to call another poster stupid. Observe the rules of the message board, please.

Brian, PSAs are aired by the networks/channels free of charge, mandated by the FCC (that's why we see so few of them in prime time and so many of them in the wee hours of the morning).

Tenacious T, I believe people can change for the better, but I'm not sure they can change this fast. I'm also a little skeptical of his motives. If not for the major brouhaha, would he have seen the light?
Well said, TV Gord. Both times.
Thank you, Calamity Jane. That needed to be said.

TV Gord you said, "Why is it that when Isaiah Washington is as stupid as they are, and we criticize him, it HAS to be because we hate blacks!?" The reality is that in thos society you have been trained even if it is subconscious to give people who don't look like you a harder time. So in reality Black people are more than likely to be judged harsher than their White counter-parts. Personally who cares and we should be about forgiveness not judging. Because I am sure you have made more than your fair share of derogatory remarks about some ones race, gender, sexual orientation or even their religious affiliations.

(So let's see, what could I pick out of thin air)...thankulord13, I'm sure you beat your kids and make phony calls to 911 and pull the tags off mattresses. I have as much evidence to say any of those things about you as what you seem to know about me. (BTW, I had a nice, hearty laugh over your pronouncement that we should not judge others...right before you went ahead and did just that about me. Quite a piece of work!)
In addition to NOT being able to make assumptions as wild as the ones you make, you also can't assume the people who criticize IW are all white and the ones who defend him are all black. Life isn't that convenient.
