Hobbit Forming: Peter Jackson to Lord Over Prequel

Peter Jackson by Pierre Vinet/New Line
Following much legal tangling and a small degree of name-calling, Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have settled all litigation relating to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and reached an agreement to bring J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit to the big screen. "I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson says in a statement to the AP. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

As was done with the three Lord of the Rings films Jackson helmed, a pair of Hobbit movies will be filmed simultaneously. Production is set to begin in 2009, with the releases coming in 2010 and 2011. While Jackson (with Fran Walsh) will executive-produce the pics, a director has yet to be named.

They couldn't have picked a more appropriate picture for an article about the Hobbit. LOL.

Guess when New Line found the 'Golden Compass' pointing toward 'Heaven's gate' they decided to settle, if they wanted even a remote chance of making money from a Hobbit movie.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't know there was any kind of sequel for The Hobbit. I thought the Rings trilogy was the sequel. Are they going to split the one book in two?

Definitely the best news ever! This totally made my day. No one but Jackson could do justice to The Hobbit.

Oh man, now I've gone and drooled geek juice all over myself.
I hope Fran writes and directs, and Howard Shore dusts off the score he was working on for The Hobbit last year before the poo hit the fan.

How on Earth are they making The Hobbit into two movies? There's barely one book of content in there.

I'm just guessing, but I'm thinking that maybe the two movies won't be specifically just The Hobbit, but will maybe get more into the other stories about the hobbits that Tolkien wrote. Just a guess though.

Oh and just to be a pain, The Hobbit is not a prequel to The Lord of the Rings. A prequel is a story written after a previously completed narrative, but which actually occurs at an earlier time. The Hobbit was written before The Lord of the Rings which classifies it more as a prelude than a prequel.
