High School Musical Duo Snub Big Big-screen Bucks

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron in High School Musical 2 by Bob D'Amico/Disney Channel
As Disney Channel's High School Musical 2 continues to rack up ratings — in addition to the record 17.2 million who caught Friday's premiere, 8.4 mil tuned in for Saturday's rerun and 7.5 mil crooned in for Sunday's sing-along — talk continues of a feature-film adaptation of the original. Stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, though, may not be available, if only because Disney is "only offering them $1 million each," a source tells the New York Post. A studio rep responds, "We are still in negotiations with the entire cast," but declined to comment further on the talks.

UPDATED: An HSM2 encore is scheduled for Thursday at 8 pm/ET. Because you haven't seen it enough, Moms and Dads.

OK, I'm one of the first to say that actors are often overpaid, but how many millions of dollars has HSM already made for Disney? Isn't it only fair to spread the wealth a bit? I don't know that HSM3 will do as well without Zac and Vanessa in the cast, especially among teen and pre-teen girls who have a crush on Troy.

I find it interesting there's no mention of Ashley Tisdale holding out for more cash. Although movie roles are being tossed to Efron left and right, Tisdale is clearly the most entertaining character in both films.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a little crazy that Disney's sequel-mania has gone so completely overboard that they're now trying to release in theaters a remake of a television-movie THAT THEY JUST RELEASED??!!!

You're not a lone PAJ; they should take their cue from Mel Brooks, ala Spaceballs; and just call it, High School Musical: The Quest For More Money.

Now, granted, I haven't actually bothered to watch either movies; but what little I saw, I wasn't that impressed. Maybe I'm too old (which feels strange saying that being in my early 20s...)but it just looks like any other "aren't teens the best?" Mickey Mouse movie; that's so sugary sweet, if you watch it too many times, it'll put ya in a diabetic coma.
I mean, come on; they break into song and dance at a baseball game? I could just see Tom Hanks standing by the dug out, shouting, "There's no dancing in baseball! There's no dancing in baseball!"
Now, I'm not saying that it's bad movie, or that I have anything against people who like it. I'm sure it's well done and is great for kids; it just seems a little over hyped.

For all the revenue being generated by HSM, those kids need to be paid accordingly. Disney, stop being a bunch of cheapos.

"There's no dancing in baseball" I was thinking the same thing!

My 9-year-old niece who is an up-and-coming musical theatre talent LOVES this show, and I think that's what it's aimed at. "Fame - the Next Generation" it's not. But instead of re-doing HSM, why not make HSM 3 a feature instead?

I think Disney needs to cough up the money because they know the next movie is going to be just as big... if not bigger.

And as for those people that think they are too old for it, you're not. I'm 20 years old. It's a musical. Many musicals have that cheery cheesiness to them. Give the movies a chance.

Zac deserves more than a million because he's the reason most girls tune in to the movies. He should refuse unless he gets at least 3 million.

Sounds like Disney's being greedy. The kids should hold out for more $ b/c if HSM is made into a movie, Disney's gonna roll in dough. This is a sure thing if all the major players are in it.

OKAY, LET'S GET SERIOUS. THE MOVIES WERE GOOD. IS $1 MILLION NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU. REMEMBER, NO ONE KNEW YOU GUYS BEFORE. ALRIGHT I REMEMBER ZAC FROM SUMMERLAND. BUT LET'S GET REAL

Zac Efron is clearly the star. Disney should shell out whatever it takes to keep him. As for Vanessa Hudgens, well, she better not hold out for too much because Disney can always recast a new romantic leading lady for Zac.

Recast any of them you want, but if you recast Ashley Tisdale, my 2 won't be tuning in anymore! She is the most entertaining and the reason why my girls tune in. One of them is even asking for the doll for Christmas!

Ashley Tisdale is definately the talent of the movies. She absolutely stole the show in HSM2. Though they should give Zac the money he is asking for because he is why all the teenie-bopper girls will go see the movie.
