High School Musical 2 Earns A++ with Record Ratings

High School Musical 2 by Adam Larkey/Disney Channel
The Friday-night premiere of Disney Channel's High School Musical 2 was voted "TV-movie Most Likely to Dominate the Nielsens," drawing a whopping 17.2 million total viewers. For starters, that makes it the most-watched basic-cable telecast ever, topping ESPN's Sept 23, 2006 MNF outing.

Oh but wait, there is more. HSM2 also garnered these superlatives:

• most-watched TV telecast with kids 6-11
• most-watched entertainment telecast with tweens 9-14
• TV's most-watched Friday telecast in five years
• basic cable's most-watched TV-movie ever in total viewers, and by a margin of 38 percent (besting the record held since January '01 by Crossfire Trail)

Now step away from the computer and go fire it up once again on the TiVo for Billy and Susie.

I had a High School Musical 2 party for my daughter and her friends and it was great. The girls really enjoyed the movie. I have to say I enjoyed it myself and my husband as well. It looks like it will be a long time before someone will break this record. Way to go HSM2.

We watched, the 5 yr old, the 11 yr old and the 13 yr old with parents watching as much as they could handle at a time. The first one was better. They seemed to try too hard to top the first one. The first wasn't bad. I just hope that they stop at HSM2, but they won't. My grandkids will be watching HSM30 knowing Disney and their sequal addictions.

I disagree. I think HSM2 topped the first one - the choreography was amazing and I think those kids did a really great job! Lighten up already.

My kids loved it. I thought the first one was charming (the first 300 times) but I thought the music in the new one was very over-produced to the point of being distracting. It sort of stole away the charm. But, the kids loved it, and it's burning a hole in my DVR already, so mission accomplished, Disney!

I do not dare to watch any of the two, and then three, HSM movies and have doubts they are portraying high school appropriately and the "clique" thing is overused. I sigh in defeat upon the record-breaking supposed 17.2 million people reported, that number can be better used for an awesome dynamic family-friendly show like Danny Phantom, which is ending next week, and with the lack of advertisement and tender-loving-care from Nickelodeon, DP will be lucky if it reaches to one million viewers. To have every person who saw HSM2 watch next week's Danny Phantom episodes isn't asking for much...is it??

I must admit, our family has already watched HSM2 at least 6 times, and the weekend is not even over yet! I agree with katneedsin: these actors did a fabulous job with the dancing and singing.

I get that people may not be into "family viewing", but please don't downplay the appeal of this cultural phenomenon. Kids are crazy about this movie (and lots of parents, too!) I can't help but sing along and get up to dance during the original, and now the sequel. Way to go, High School Musical!

some people are so bitter. well you can't please everybody. But one thing that I like about this is that it broke the friday night death spell. Way to go HSM2!

High School Musical Two [and one!] is probably one of my favorite movies. I think that they portrayal of roles in this movie are actually somewhat accurate [being in high school myself] I can relate to the situations that these kids are in, in some way or another. I think that these are excellent movies, and I congradulate the success of the actors, and all those involved on [two] jobs well done!

I'm more curious as to how well the Naruto marathon did on Cartoon Network.

I haven't even seen the entire movie yet, just most of it. There was a time when I called HSM was my favorite movie ever; I had watched it 10 times, I bought the CD, and I freaked when I heard that they were making a second movie and possibly an amusement park ride at the Disney Parks, but those times are past. The only reason I'll watch it again is so I can write a full blog of the movie, and it doesn't look pretty. HSM2 blew.:-p

Lets be honest, as good as HSM2 is; and it was/is very good; it fell short one critical area, dare I say “To Much” musical and not enough dialog. If you take a good look at the central characters, they hardly talk at all? To much singing…yea I know it’s a musical…but still look at the original, look at “Singing in the Rain” and all the other great musicals of the past…can we talk “character development” here. I honestly believe Disney sought too much input from “tweens” and not enough from the professionals!

I here they’re already planning HSM3 for theater release in 08; Disney lets do a bit more character development here…make em’ REAL!

haven't seen the first movie, but i enjoyed the second. still...man oh man, do all young singers have to sing in such a high, nasally voice? that Gabrielle girl was especially ear-piercing.

My daughter loved this movie and we watched again last night. She attended a party with boys and girls Friday night. They all seemed to like it. I think this movie is better than the first and I am happy with the messages of both movies!
