Heroes Scribe Teases Big Returns, Romance & More!
David Anders by Justin Lubin/NBC Photo
Daring to venture outside the Beverly Hilton base camp for the TCA press tour, on Wednesday morning I trekked to the extremely rural location where Heroes was shooting scenes involving, um, a familiar character, a brand-new one, and lots of intriguing mural art. Oh yeah, and there was a tortoise.
In between shooting videos with a trio of cast members, I grabbed a few minutes with story editor Chuck Kim. Interestingly, he said that Heroes is better for the WGA strike which forced the NBC series to wrap up its sophomore season in December.
"If Season 2 hadn't been cut, we were going to focus [the second half of the season] on the villains," he said. Instead, Volume III, kicking off Sept. 22, will take a more in-depth look at the temptation of the dark side. "The great thing is we've made [that arc] much better than it would have been," says Kim. "We'll be seeing some new [villainous] characters, but we'll also be dealing with our series regulars and see how their abilities are 'tempting' them."
Heroes' three-hour season-opening "event" (which kicks off with a "clip"/interview show) will wrap up any cliffhangers, then launch into the new arc, which in addition to villainy will explore romance ("I think the fans will really enjoy some of the connections we'll be making," teases Kim) and welcome a return... or two.
In addition to Kristen Bell's multiple-episode encore as Elle (she first resurfaces in the second half of the two-hour premiere), David Anders is expected back as Adam Munroe. Kim, however, wouldn't indulge my appeal to give Anders' fans any more to chew on. (But oh, how I tried....) "Adam is an immortal guy, so he can't die so easily," the scribe acknowledged. "It's pretty safe to say that he could come back at any time from that coffin" in which he was buried alive.
And when he does, will he be nastier than ever? Says Kim, "Well, he is pretty mad at Hiro!" — Matt Mitovich

I think it is true that Heroes actually benefited from the strike (from a creative standpoint). Last year was so scattered, I think the strike helped them regain their focus, or so one would hope.

THREE HOURS for the premiere? That just seems like all sorts of license to get extra bloated and scatter things even further, because this show has proven that "tying up loose ends" is NOT among its strong suits. (Of course, neither is dialogue, but the first season proved that strong story and some good performances can overcome that.) Season Two was such a massive, unfocused drop in quality on all sides that I really cannot imagine it recovering enough to pull together a worthwhile third outing. Now, it's true that a few years ago I would've said the same thing about Desperate Housewives, and look how wrong I was, but then, they also fell a much higher place than Heroes had ever risen to. Best of luck to them in finding their path, their logic, their characters, and their balls again this time around, but count me out.

I'm glad to see Heroes turned the strike into a positive thing that improved their creativity, rather than giving us something rushed and pointing figers at it (ie - Bones).
The only part of season 2 that annoyed me was Hiro's seemingly unending time in ancient Japan, although I felt like that all paid off tenfold when the Adam twist was revealed. I have wondered, if I go and watch it all back-to-back on DVD, if it feels like it flows better without the week-long wait in between each episode.

Calm down. The first of the three hours is just a recap/clip show. Lost did something similar with its pop-up reruns. It's a standard two-hour premiere. Lots of big hit drama series do that nowadays.
I thought there was some question as to Kristen Bell's return. So she will show up, but for how long and when?
I had heard some nasty rumor that they were going to retcon the Peter/Claire family relationship so that Hayden and Milo could play tongue hockey on-screen. I really hope that isn't true.

Sounds great! Thanks Matt. I hope that one of your cast interviews is with new cast member -Cristine Rose. She needs more coverage by you guys - we love her.
Just enough of a tease, thanks.
And yes, I think people should give the show a second chance, I've never heard of giving up on a favorite show so easily. At least watch the first night of shows and see.
Season two may not have been as good as season one, but it was better than most of the TV I watched last year. I have faith they can use this strike to really re-boot.

I reported in last week's Mega Minute video that she is back for multiple episodes (as many as 7, at current count). She first appears in the second hour of the season premiere.

I swear if they change Peter and Claire's relationship from "related" to "not related" that is really going to piss me off. That was one of the cool things about the storyline, "Holy crap I'm your uncle and my brother is your father." It's a really good dynamic.
