Grey's Star Heigl: Gizzie Was "a Ratings Ploy"

Katerine Heigl and Knight in Grey's Anatomy by Scott Garfield/ABC
Maybe T.R. won't want to buy that tux just yet. In a deliciously candid interview with Vanity Fair, Katherine Heigl admits that, like many a Grey's Anatomy fan, she has scratched her head over the Izzie-George romance. "That was kind of a big change for Izzie, wasn't it, after she was so up on her moral high ground," muses the actress. "They really hurt [Callie], and they didn't seem to be taking a lot of responsibility for it. I have a really hard time with that kind of thing."

So why even go there? Heigl, who herself admits, "I don't really know Izzie very well," also states, "it was a ratings ploy. It was absolutely something that shocked people [and] wasn't predictable." Noting that Grey's is now in its fourth season and less able to surprise, she surmises, "Business is business... but I want there to be some cooperation between the business and the creative end, so there's some way of keeping it real." Because lord knows, Gizzie has been unreal!

I've ALWAYS loved Katherine Heigl for how refreshingly honest she is, and here she's once again saying what most of us fans are feeling. I watched Season 3 again before Season 4 premiered, and I STILL couldn't get over Denny. I don't see how anyone in Izzie's situation could have gotten over Denny so quickly and then fallen "in love" with her best friend. It just doesn't happen. I think Shonda & Co. need to realize this huge mistake and put a stop to it as soon as the @#%&-ing writer's strike is over.

Heigl is correct but it was also a disaster.

Sorry, I don't buy it. A ratings ploy? Give me a break. It was a pairing that the audience rejected, so they split them up. If only they had broken Meridith and Derek up earlier -- that would have been a ratings booster.

And for the record, very little ever surprised the audience. GA was predictable, superficial, poor cousin of ER since day one. The only show worse than GA is PP.

Hey "ThatGirl", when you are on an initials only basis with all the shows you watch, maybe it's time to get up off the couch and go out and get some fresh air. There are real people out there dying to talk to you. What the heck is PP?

She really has guts, doesn't she? Always saying the stuff that most other actors would keep zipped tight. I wonder what Shonda will think of this.

Uhm...Samurai Pal,what's wrong with using initials of shows? It's just more convienent. And ER is just ER, anyway. It's not abbreviated, that's just the title.

I'm not trying to be offensive or anything...I was just wondering.

PS-- PP...Private Practice?

My theory was that George was just a rebound romance for Izzie...
And she has always loved him..... as a best friend.... and that is (hopefully) how she will always love him!!!

What it was is a very bad decision, no matter which way you cut it.

I still cannot stand her. And Gizzie is the reason I decided to stop watching Grey's after Season 3. It was the finally 'effin straw. All my friends are planning to jump ship as well.

And to the poster that has a problem with abbrev., get over it.

Grey's has this thing with characters falling for one another at the drop of a hat. Izzie with everyone. Now Derek with Nurse Plot Device. Contrived City. *sigh* Its refreshing to see someone call it like it is.

I watched the Season 2 finale on Lifetime this weekend (I was snowed in..ick)and I still found myself crying when Denny died. He just not have left the show. I still love Grey's but it just seems to be stuck in 2nd gear or something. I hate to admit I even kinda miss Burke.
Ick... :(

The one thing I liked about Gizzie was how it all fell apart. It really showed the foolishness of getting caught up in an affair, and also the emotional toll it took on the friendship.

I don't like the lasting damage to the characters. George was my favorite intern, the classic underdog, and I don't see him as that type of romantic lead, especially with Derek/Mark/Alex already around.

And it's not helping Izzie. I really liked her the best with Alex. My favorite Grey's moment s when he lifted her up in the gown after Denny had died. But anyhow, she went Alex, super-love Denny, and then super love George, all in a year. Kind of wierd. This is the woman who gave up her daughter to focus on her education and goals.

She didn't say Gizzie was a ratings ploy, she said how it happened, the whole drunken affair was a ratings ploy, which even I as a huge Gizzie fan know. They could have put them together in so many other ways but they didn,t, they used the most shocking way to get people talking and discussing and shocked.

As for the fans rejecting them, give me a break. All the recent polls show at least 50% of people rooting for Gizzie to make it, some polls even show a slight majority wanting them together.

Katherine has said she liked Gizzie as a couple and their chemistry but she hated how they got together, she has been saying tis for months and so had TR, that they love Gizzie, but hate the adultery part of it. Katie also said that Shonda had told her since day 1 Gizzie would happen.

Most of the people I know watch for Gizzie alone, and have quit the show over the recent attempt to destroy her. In fact, I know an awful lot more people who love them than hate them. Check out the BGL thread on Fanforum or George and Izzie's LJ community or Fanbolt or Youtube, Gizzie has a HUGE fanbase.

They just don't always talk as loud as the haters.

If Shonda has really dropped a couple to please one half of the fanbase while angering the other half of the fanbase enough to make them quit in protest, that is pretty stupid.

Also, Katherine Heigl has said that nobody was indifferent to Gizzie, half of people adored them and half hated them.

Izzie and Alex were terrible, she treated him like a sex toy she used to fulfill her unfulfilled sex needs. He loved her, she never did, Katherine Heigl said that in an interview in season 2.

But yeah, every Gizzie fan know the drunken one-night stand was a ratings ploy like Katie is saying, doesn't mean the couple was or that Katie doesn't like them, it is the story she hates
