Grey's Boss on "Gizzie," the Dark Finale and Next Fall

In a comprehensive blog entry dissecting Thursday's season finale, Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes heads off viewer laments that happy endings were in short supply for the Seattle Gracers. First explaining that the season gone by was "about most of all... the idea [that] 'having it all' is a myth," Rhimes goes on to say, "I did my level best to burn it all down... to the ground so that we can have a place to build from next season. But next season... oh, next season is all about the fun and pain of new beginnings. The future is wide open."

Does said future find George ditching Callie for Izzie? [Shudder] Rhimes is "glad" that fans "have very strong opinions" on the love triangle, and admits that putting Callie on the baby track perhaps only to save her marriage "goes against every feminist bone in my body." But, she notes, "it is also human to delude yourself into believing [otherwise]."

As for a Season 4 preview, Rhimes lets slip that where Derek is heading "is going to be interesting to watch," while McSteamy Mark (largely MIA from the finale) "starts fresh, without [spin-off-bound] Addison. He'll get to stand on his own" — or, more likely, lie supine in bed with someone hot.

Do you hope to see newcomer Lexie Grey shake things up? See Trivial Matt'rs for my thoughts on her arrival.

I loved the season finale. The more angst and drama the better. Some people are complaining that it was too sad and depressing and that the characters are never happy. To me, the drama is what makes this show so interesting. I say leave the happy endings for the final season. In the meantime I'll enjoy all the pain and heartbreak.

I'm so glad I never have to watch Grey's again.

It is ALL ABOUT PRIVATE PRACTICE NOW. Oh, Addison. You are so amazing.

I also loved the season finale and am certainly willing to give Shonda a chance to keep her promise to the fans.

Shonda - don't pull an Amy Sherman-Palladino, please!

I'm also looking forward to Private Practice!

She is such an amazing writer that I am sure she can write wonderful stories for next year. Unfortunately, the finale was so depressing on every front that I don't think I'll bother tuning in any longer. I've never seen a show end every storyline on such sad notes. I think I'll stick to The Office from now on.

What?? Shonda Rhimes is so full of it. Why is it that she comes out with these long drawn out excuses whenever she puts out another terrible episode that the fans trash? There comes a time when you are apologizing/explaining the rationale behind a show so much rather than being proud of it that you maybe need to realize that something needs to be done. All she ever seems to do anymore is justify the bad choices she has made as showrunner with illogical (or maybe fart logical?) and rambling blogs. The more you try to come up with excuses, the more convinced people are that you are just writing whatever you can come up with for shock/drama value.

I read Shonda's blog on the Greyswriters website and I thought it was a bunch of crap. She's turned this show into a cheesy soap opera, written schizophrenic characters, and disappointed alot of viewers. seriously.

I was really upset after this season finale, but I know that Shonda wouldn't have done this to us if she didn't have a plan on where it is going next season. Personally I can't wait to see how this all pans out. I'm really excited about Private Practice...it's like a reunion of all my favorite characters from all my favorite shows (Francie from Alias, Piz from the recently axed VMars :( Judging Amy, Addison of course, and so on and so on), I just think there are many places for this new show to go and I am excited!!

I LOVED THIS SEASON FINALE

It was a season finale, of course everything was going to fall apart... that's what happens in all the seasons finales from every show that aren't endidng their run!!!

last season's was more depresing, i don't understand why they are calling this one like that.

And the thing that i don't get is why everyone is so surprised, the latest episodes of the show really showed us the direction of the finale. It was obvious one of them was going to fail the test, the wedding wasn't going to happen and all the relationship issues between M-D, I-G-C and A-R/E weren't be resolved... it's like you guys haven't watch TV in a long time to not notice that!!...

or maybe most of you are still in shock for the sad upfront week that has been and that's why this episode seemed to depresing.

I thought the season finale was great -- until they started breaking everyone up/making everyone completely, crushingly miserable. If I want to see people in constant peril, I'll go watch LOST. There have been glimpses of the fantastic show Grey's used to be this season, but it keeps getting soapier and confuses dramatic tension with . . . well, whatever this crap was. The drama they're trying to create between Meredith and Derek seems really artificial -- and if I was doubting before whether or not Grey's had jumped the shark, I had my answer when Meredith's little sister (Derek's bar girl) walked into that locker room . . .
